After a bit more reading into it, my understanding of the story ended up being a bit incorrect. Editing to more closely reflect what the vignettes were portraying.

In Twisted Dreams, a series of vignettes show Giana being bullied and outcast at school, getting in trouble for sleeping in class and bringing a doll with her, her father arguing with the teacher after she presumably gets suspended and then him ranting and trying to bust open her door at home with Maria protecting her. While it paints a grim picture of her home life at first glance, the fact that Giana's father was shown chewing out the teacher and would later go on to hire a homeschooling tutor for her in the story book shows that he does care about her wellbeing. What we see of him is most likely what Giana sees him as in her imagination due to him coming down hard on her after the incident at school rather than what he actually is.
