[[WMG: The dolphin who asks Ecco how high in the sky he can fly ''is'' Ecco]]
Specifically, the Ecco who travelled through time after gaining power from the Asterite, subtly warning his past self to get out of the ocean so he's not harvested and creating a StableTimeLoop.

There's no sign of industrialisation or anything suggesting the modern age. The only sign of humans, aside from Atlantis, are all the wooden shipwrecks. The ships, however, are still fresh, with the wood colouring still being visible, instead of covered in algae and barnacles. Suggesting this is an age with a lot of wooden ships sailing about and being sunk, such as the [[UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfPiracy Golden Age of Piracy]], or very close to that time.

[[WMG: Ecco's true identity]]
"St. Gabriel's Mask" is Ecco's ImageSong, narrated from his perspective. As the commenter [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GON5ieTglEc AlchemistiD]] theorizes:
->In Christian mythology Gabriel is the patron saint of messengers, and is frequently the one who appears in the old testament in various guises to speak to God's favored. He's frequently depicted with a trumpet. He is also an Archangel like Michael and thus fully capable of wrecking face.\\
Given the song is about Ecco and his experiences from the first game, the title implies that he himself is St. Gabriel's mask. The angel's latest mortal guise.

Similar to an above theory, only for the [[UsefulNotes/SegaDreamcast Dreamcast]][=/=][=PS2=] game as opposed to the Genesis series. The player character's interactions with the various cetaceans are the first sparks of the alliance between Singers and Humans. Endless Ocean 2 is where the more in-depth interaction starts, with ambassadors from different dolphin species guiding the player to better understand Singer culture, showing them the remnants of a previous alliance with the Okeanides, which ultimately fell to ruin for reasons as-of-yet unrevealed (possibly falling apart after fending off an earlier Foe attack, in which they were victorious but with too many losses to continue their culture). The Commerson's dolphin is the final guide, implied to be able to speak and guarding the ancient treasures alongside the singing dragons. Basically, the player in the Endless Ocean games is responsible for the start of the utopian society spoken of at the beginning of Defender.

** Alternative possibility: The Queen ''did'' send those drones... because she saw the bad future she had created and hated it, or perhaps it was having negative repercussions for her and her kind, and thus she knew it had to be undone. Then she had a thought: "Didn't there used to be this one dolphin?..."

** Alternative Alternative possibility: Those drones were the Scratch and Grounder of the Vortex, and thought they were doing a good thing by capturing Ecco but actually they were making a huge mistake.

[[WMG:Ecco 3 would have consisted entirely of Ecco's XanatosGambit to save the Atlanteans and/or screw over the Vortex for good.]]
According to the same interview linked above, Ecco didn't even bother going to the same time period the Vortex Queen did at the end of ''Tides of Time'' -- he went to the Atlanteans, who had been wiped out by the Vortex a few thousand years before the present. Perhaps he [[XanatosRoulette already knew]] the Vortex would get stomped and killed off by wildlife in Prehistory (turns out they survived just well enough to integrate into it instead), or figured any major ramifications to the timeline [[TimeyWimeyBall would have already happened]] the moment the Queen beat him to the Time Machine anyway, so whatever they did must have been a StableTimeLoop and it was okay to let it be for the moment. Instead, he went for reinforcements, hoping to enlist their help in taking the fight starward and wiping out the Vortex altogether.

And just to add to the fun, Ecco is descended from the albino bottlenose dolphin that the player partnered with, defending the utopian human/dolphin society because his line is ever-grateful to the race that rescued their ancestor from sharks. The great white shark in the second level is a descendant of either Magu Tapah or Thanatos - or, if you believe him to be an immortal ocean spirit, ''is'' Magu Tapah. The eight-arms is a friend of the giant squid (both guarding the entrance of caves - and who knows how long giant octopodes/squid can live?), and the humpback whale mother and child at the beginning of Defender are the several-times-great-grandchildren of the humpback whale mother and child towards the beginning of Endless Ocean 2.

Basically, the player in the Endless Ocean games is responsible for the start of the utopian society spoken of at the beginning of Defender.

Man's Nightmare is what would have happened if the player had never been able to find the Ancient Mother in the first Endless Ocean, destroying that vital event when Singers first allowed humans to meet the godlike whale up-close and in peace; without intelligence and ambition, Singers became too stupid to realize that humanity could be a potentially dangerous force if something was not done to alter the path they were on, and so the Ancient Mother was instead hunted to extinction and the dolphins enslaved. Dolphin's Nightmare occurred when, lacking compassion and wisdom, the Singers revealed themselves, but could not see the point in allying with the human race or sharing their knowledge. The ambassador dolphins instead became generals in the war against humanity, driving humans from the oceans, and so the Okeanides' ruins were left undiscovered. Domain of the Foe is basically untouched: the Ancient Mother was met, the Okeanides' ruins discovered, but without humility, the dolphins never thought that the past might repeat itself, so no barrier was erected to protect the Earth, and the Foe were victorious.

And just to add to the fun, Ecco is descended from the albino bottlenose dolphin that the player partnered with, defending the utopian human/dolphin society because his line is ever-greatful to the race that rescued their ancestor from sharks. And just to add to the fun, Ecco is descended from one of the bottlenose dolphins (either a normal one or the albino from 2) that the player partnered with. The great white shark in the second level is a descendant of either Magu Tapah or Thanatos - or, if you believe him to be an immortal ocean spirit, ''is'' Magu Tapah. The eight-arms is a friend of the giant squid (both guarding the entrance of caves), and the humpback whale mother and child at the beginning of Defender is are the several-times-great-grandchildren of the humpback whale mother and child towards the beginning of Endless Ocean 2.

"The ocean is alive now - it feels and thinks." The Asterite's has become its brain, and the water is its extended body. That's also where the Skyway came from - it wants its Singer friends to be able to travel anywhere, even the ones that can't fly.

[[WMG: EndlessOcean takes place in the same universe as Defender.]]
Similar to an above theory, only for the Dreamcast/PS2 game as opposed to the Genesis series.
