On May 5th, 2016, Cryptic announced STO's third full expansion, ''Agents of Yesterday'', to be released in the summer - adding the TOS-era starfleet as a starting faction with its own storyline and new original series themed ships. On May 12, Cryptic announced that the game, previously a PC exclusive, would receive a UsefulNotes/PlayStation4 and UsefulNotes/XboxOne port in the fall.

''Star Trek Online'' is a SpaceOpera {{MMORPG}} developed by Creator/CrypticStudios based on the ''Franchise/StarTrek'' franchise using the ''VideoGame/ChampionsOnline'' engine, originally released in 2010. The game was originally being developed by Perpetual, but was auctioned off as the studio was facing severe financial troubles at the time, and actually had to lay off nearly half of the development staff. The game has [[ChannelHop moved publishers]] due to corporate wrangling several times: initially published by Creator/{{Atari}}, Cryptic was sold to Creator/RunicGames' parent company Creator/PerfectWorldEntertainment (creator of ''VideoGame/PerfectWorld'') in May 2011, then PWE was bought by Creator/GearboxSoftware's parent company Embracer Group in December 2021.
