* AssholeVictim:
** Considering that [[spoiler:the wardens were starving the residents for an [[OrganTheft organ harvesting]] scheme (except the one they were having sex with), you can’t exactly feel sorry for them after one gets chopped in the neck with a cleaver and the other gets their soul sacrificed to a demon]].
** In Episode 2, [[spoiler:it's heavily implied that Andrew and Ashley's parents sold them out to the government organ harvesting scheme in return for a generous life insurance payout, which explains why they were conveniently missing when the apartment was quarantined. It makes it a lot easier for Andrew to justify selling their souls to the demon]].

* CrapsackWorld: Essentially every character is mean, evil, or at least prickly apathetic, including almost all of the [[AssholeVictim murder victims]]. The world hardly cares about morality, only making sure that they don't get caught doing their bad deeds. In fact, the nicest people in the game are demon worshipers...

** It's never fully explained ''why'' the entire apartment building is under quarantine, or even if the quarantine is legitimate and not merely an excuse to [[spoiler:harvest people's organs]].
** Whether [[spoiler:Andrew and Ashley's parents were complicit in the organ harvesting scheme by selling out their own children. Sure, they claim ignorance, but there's plenty of circumstantial evidence to suggest otherwise]].
** Andrew hears a news report about a massive chemical leak in another city where citizens are ordered to lock themselves in their homes and wait for emergency services to arrive, suggesting that [[spoiler:it's another organ harvesting operation]].

* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: When Andrew [[spoiler:disposes of Mr. Washing Machine]] your choices are "Shoot" and "SHOOT!!!" The former will have Andrew fire one bullet, which is enough, while the latter has Andrew firing until the gun is empty. Ashley will castigate Andrew for wasting all their ammunition, but Andrew does point out [[BrandishmentBluff no one else knows it's empty.]]
** In the Decay ending, [[spoiler:if gun is out of bullets, Ashley will not have the option to shoot Andrew in the dream showdown.]]

But she also happen to have the same good looks as her children, is just as delightfully snarky as them, and does have some sympathetic traits as a struggling mother who has to deal with her crazy children. She is definitely meant to appeal to those who like older women.

** Andrew blushes intensely after they caught a vision engaging a BrotherSisterIncest.
** Ashley and her brother throw their parents' skulls into the lake.

* TheDogBitesBack: With events in the apartment escape taking him firmly off society's rails and forced into a survivalist mindset, the methods and manipulations that Ashley used to coerce [[ExtremeDoormat Andrew]] when they were kids are beginning to backfire. Starting with the RageBreakingPoint below, Ashley attempting to force the old status quo will [[spoiler:further alienate Andrew to the point he starts seeing MurderSuicide as the only way out in the Decay route of Chapter 2. The vision of this playing out becomes Ashley's WakeUpCall that their toxic relationship needs to change and [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness leaves Ashley truly terrified of the future for the first time.]]]]

* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Contrary to what is shown on the title art, Andrew is the only one who uses the cleaver. Ashley meanwhile holds onto a gun she [[spoiler:looted from the warden whose soul she sacrificed to The Entity]] and, unlike Andrew, she even explicitly declares it to be hers. A downplayed example as she borrows the gun to Andrew for the only occasion they had to actually use it so far.

The game tells the story of Andrew and Ashley, a pair of siblings who are trapped in their small apartment. Their parents have left, and the entire building is under quarantine, with no residents allowed to leave. To make matters worse, food is in short supply and the government wardens are uninterested in helping.

But there's hope: they can reach their neighbor's apartment - the same neighbor who is fond of trying to summon demons. Whatever are two mentally unstable and unhealthily co-dependent siblings to do? (Hint: it's murder and cannibalism.)
