''Skullgirls'' is a fast-paced 2D FightingGame, developed by Reverge Labs and published by Autumn Games and {{Konami}}, that puts players in control of female warriors ala ArcanaHeart. However, it eschews the "moe" aesthetic and anime designs for a more stylized "Golden Age" Hollywood film motif, with Art Deco ("Dark Deco", as the designers lovingly call it) stage backgrounds and a theatrical, movie-studio front end and presentation. Skullgirls features artwork from Alex Ahad, whose work has appeared in Lava Punch, UDON’s Tribute books, and ScottPilgrim; while [[PromotedFanboy fighting game veteran]] Mike "Mike Z" Zaimont leads the project, with CristinaValenzuela directing the voice acting and MichiruYamane providing the music. It's set for release for PlaystationNetwork and XboxLiveArcade at some point in 2012.

It's gameplay is reminiscent of old-school arcade fighters, with a high-definition twist. The most notable feature is the "ratio system" that allows for each player to choose to fight with one character or a team of up to three characters, resulting in different combinations for a particular match. Another feature is the game's combo-detection system: if it senses that an infinite combo is being performed, the damage strikes change color and will allow the opponent to "burst" out of the infinite, knocking back the offensive player.

The game's storyline is set in the fictional Canopy Kingdom. The combatants fight in an attempt to control the enigmatic Skull Heart, a mysterious MacGuffin with the power to bestow wishes -- but not without a substantial price. Should the soul be less than pure, both the victor's wish and her being will be corrupted into a living nightmare that haunts humanity. She will be known as the Skullgirl, a monstrous entity of immense power. In the middle of a war with two other nations, the Canopy Kingdom's queen got hold of the Skull Heart and wished for victory and peace; in a way, she got her wish -- she was transformed into the most powerful and dangerous Skullgirl of all time, and all three countries had to stop fighting each other due to the sheer necessity of killing her before she could destroy them all. At the time the story opens, the war is a memory still fresh in everyone's minds, when suddenly rumors abound that a new Skullgirl has arisen and is on the move...
