Add that to that wide array of spells and that it's possible to do some MegaManning of boss abilities by upgrading staves with boss drops, and magic is a viable alternative.

(The words seem to be German-based names for the games, with Sechs being said more like "zeks" (if you spell in English phonetically), and Zzyzx is roughly "zaizeks". So it could be said that the Sechs is simply a shortened version of the empire's name.)
