Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an upcoming StealthBasedGame in the long running Franchise/MetalGear series by Kojima Productions. The game made its public debut on Spike TV's 2012 Video Game Awards, although it was initially advertised as an original IP by an unknown Swedish company named Moby Dick Studios headed by the elusive Joakim Mogren. Nevertheless, the teaser trailer for The Phantom Pain provided numerous hints regarding Kojima's involvement with the project, raging from the protagonist resemblance to MGS hero Big Boss to faded out letters on the logo that formed the title "Metal Gear Solid V." On March 27, 2013, after months of speculation, Kojima and his team confirmed at the Game Developers Conference that The Phantom Pain was indeed the next numbered Metal Gear Solid sequel.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an upcoming title in the long running Franchise/MetalGear series, once again helmed by HideoKojima. Little is known of the plot, other than the prologue takes place after the events of VideoGame/MetalGearSolidPeaceWalker, with the player once again assuming the role of Naked Snake (a.k.a. ->From "FOX", two phantoms were born.

Big Boss) and the main section of the game takes place 9 years later, after Big Boss awakens from a coma. It uses Konami's next-generation development platform, the Fox Engine, and will be open world.

The title was originally teased as two apparently separate games; Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes in October of 2012, and again in December 2012 as a seemingly new Western IP known as The Phantom Pain. After much speculation and hinting over their connection, they were revealed in March of 2013 to be different events within the same game.

It's currently targeted for release on both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, with no release date confirmed as of yet.

!!This game uses the following tropes:
* BadassNormal: MGSV will feature Big Boss and Jack Bau- I mean, Ishmael fighting to stay alive.
* BadDreams: Big Boss is having them while in a coma, as he deals with the moment when his vehicle was hit as well as the events of MGS3 - and Ocelot and Psycho Mantis may be involved in the bad dreams too.
* BirdCaged: The boy held in Camp Omega. His identity is .
* BodyHorror: Chico has a headphone jack in his chest, and he has a set plugged into it when we first see him.
** The disfigured man is completely made up of burns and scar tissue.
** How about Big Boss waking up and finding out he's missing an arm?
* CallBack: "Kept you waiting huh?"
** CallForward: "Excellent, Snake. Age hasn't slowed you down one bit."
* DamselInDistress: Paz survived the events of Peace Walker and is being imprisoned in a Cuban prison camp by Cipher after the authorities captured her. Snake is infiltrating this base so he can rescue her and learn about Cipher by interrogating her.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: The disfigured man in the first trailer is almost certainly the latter.
** [[spoiler:Expy: The fedora makes him look like Freddy Krueger.]]
* GunshipRescue: Snake now has the ability to call in a helicopter to pull him out of hot spots or provide air support; and it'll play music of the player's choice as it flies in.
* ImmediateSequel: The Ground Zeroes segment appears to take place within a month after Peace Walker thanks to the discovery of Paz at sea.
* MythologyGag
** One of the lines spoken to Big Boss over the radio in the debut trailer is "Excellent, Snake. Age hasn't slowed you down one bit." This line is originally from VideoGame/MetalGearSolid, said by Campbell as Solid Snake is getting off the service elevator (if you didn't alert the guards while waiting for it to arrive).
** The same scene has Big Boss removing his infrared goggles while facing towards the camera, a reference to the title screen[=/=]promotional art of [=MGS1=], which showed Solid Snake removing his goggles as well.
* TheOner: The entire Ground Zeroes trailer is this.
* RideOfTheValkyries: During the trailer this is the song that plays when the helicopter comes to extract him; however, as stated above, the music can be changed by the player.
* SceneryPorn: The FOX Engine that was used to make the in-game trailer.
* SequelNumberSnarl: Ground Zeroes was announced not as the official Metal Gear Solid 5, but a "prologue", which would've made it the second unnumbered [=MGS=] sequel under Kojima's direction following Peace Walker and his eighth game in the overall series (counting the [=MSX2=] entries).
* ShoutOut: Snake's climbing of a cliff face in the rain prior to infiltrating the base is evocative of TheGunsOfNavarone. Kojima previously cited the film as an influence.
* ShroudedInMyth
** The mysterious XOF unit seem to make a point of erasing any evidence of their presence, up to and including their own badges. The FOX unit's policy was much the same, leave no evidence of your infiltration behind.
** The original VGAs trailer for The Phantom Pain claimed absolutely no links to the Metal Gear series, posing as a new survival-horror IP from an unknown Swedish studio. The trailer did provide clues, but they were quite subtle.
* TheEighties: The second part of the game is 9 years after Peace Walker.
* Understatement: When Kaz tells Snake that he'll be infiltrating the base alone, he responds "Fine. I like some alone time now and then".
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: Averted. The trailer mentions that the prison camp is located in Cuba, specifically in Guantanamo Naval Base.
* WideOpenSandbox: The first title in the series to be open world, allowing for more creative and diverse approaches to infiltration.
* XanatosSpeedChess: By reading between the lines a little in the trailer a few things become obvious. The XOF and the disfigured man are planning to infiltrate Mother Base disguised as the UN inspectors, possibly to attempt to steal Metal Gear tech from the MSF. Big Boss and Miller know this, and are using the lowered base defenses as an opportunity to exfiltrate Paz and Chico. On top of that, it is implied that the disfigured man is aware of Big Boss's attempt to recapture Paz and Chico, and that he plans for Chico to be a trojan horse when he tells Chico to, "say hi to (his) Boss when (he) gets home." Ultimately, it seems XOF were one step ahead, as Mother Base gets torn apart in a huge attack.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: The Ground Zeroes trailer was initially thought to take some time after Peace Walker thanks to the initial close-up of Snake making him appear like he was greying. Kojima would later confirm that this was simply a side effect of the lighting in the shot. The promotional renders and actual playing sections depicted Snake with brown hair.
