* CastOfSnowflakes: All the bonus characters are taken from Indie Games, usually using the original art style, making each one look completely unique and out of place. For example, all versions of Super Meat Boy have a boy in a cape, a girl in gimp gear, a color-changing stick, an 8-bit rainbow trailing guy, and a thing that looks suspiciously like Meat Boy, along with many exclusives to different versions of the game.

** Super Meat Boy takes it to extremes with many major indie games having a representative, including Jill, Steve?, Captain Viridian, Tim, Commander Video, Ogmo, VideoGame/Spelunky, VideoGame/Runman, again, VideoGame/N, VideoGame/AlienHominid and a VideoGame/s, Josef, VideoGame/Flywrench, Naija, and The Kid. To the surprise of everyone, there's also a Headcrab. Each of those characters has their own special abilities, be it a DoubleJump, limited levitation or tunneling. Some of the characters only exist in either the UsefulNotes/Xbox360 version or the PC version. Most PC-only characters have an Xbox equivalent, and vice versa.

* BossSubtitles: Commander Video, Jill, Ogmo, Flywrench, and The Kid all get these. (Flywrench does it a bit differently -- instead of a freezeframe and displaying his name and the game he's from, it's simply a black screen saying "Launch Flywrench.exe?")

A map pack was later released on December 8, 2008. A sequel, Super Meat Boy, was released on UsefulNotes/XboxLiveArcade and PC in Fall and Winter of 2010, then later ported to the PS4, Playstation Vita and Wii U. A UsefulNotes/WiiWare port was planned as well, but it was later cancelled as Nintendo's 40 MB limit for [=WiiWare=] games was much too small for the developers to work with. A third game for mobile devices, PC, and UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch, Super Meat Boy Forever, will be released sometime in 2018.

** The Flash game opens with Dr. Fetus stealing Bandaid Girl ala VideoGame/GhostsNGoblins. This is also present in Chapter 7 of Super Meat Boy, . Super Meat Boy likewise begins each chapter with a re-enactment of the opening to a different game:
*** Chapter 1: The [=CPS1=] editions of VideoGame/StreetFighterII (The World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting)
*** Chapter 2: VideoGame/CastlevaniaI
*** Chapter 3: VideoGame/AdventuresOfLolo
*** Chapter 4: VideoGame/NinjaGaiden
*** Chapter 5: VideoGame/MegaMan2
*** Chapter 6: VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue
*** Chapter 7: Again, Ghosts 'n Goblins
*** Chapter I (Xbox 360 only): VideoGame/BubbleBobble
** Also: Hot Coffee. Yes, really.
** There are shout outs to other indie games too (VideoGame/Canabalt, for example).

* AwesomeButImpractical:
** The Kid. All he can do is double jump, something that Ogmo, a character that is easier to unlock, can already do. What The Kid is important for is bragging rights; if you manage to unlock him, you're essentially better than 98% of all Super Meat Boy players. However, the Kid is faster and a bit lighter than Ogmo, which lets him do tricks that Ogmo otherwise can't do.
** Also, Ogmo's double jump is more horizontal than vertical while The Kid's double jump has pretty good height.

* FiveManBand: Meat Boy, , and the Warp Zone characters by default, due to being in all versions.
** TheLeader: Meat Boy (TheProtagonist)
** TheLancer: Commander Video (the one Meat Boy ends up knowing the most due to him being a main character in BitTrip)
** TheBigGuy: Ogmo (UnskilledButStrong, having a DoubleJump that's relatively weak compared to The Kid)
** TheSmartGuy: IWannaBeTheGuy The Kid (need mad skills to unlock him, and experienced with the genre due to his own adventures)
** TheChick: Jill (the token female among the FiveManBand)
** TeamPet: Flywrench (the only non-humanoid among the FiveManBand)
**
