The gameplay is a 3D beat-em-up type where players are in control of Edward and the combat revolves around the use of alchemy. Using a special button, they can transform a variety of objects into weapons, blades, items and other objects as well as equip them with numerous enhancers. It has a role-playing mechanic, allowing players to level up by defeating enemies and earning experience.

* CrashIntoHello: How the Elrics meet Armony. She is climbing a mountain in search of an etherflower and upon slipping she lands rump-first into Edward's face.
* DirtyCop: Hiessgart's military police is privitized to serve the local corrupt Brigadier-General.
* GreatEscape: After killing Nemda's pet chimera that was rampaging Hiessegart's castle, the Elric brothers are court-martialed and thrown into prison. Rather than wait out their sentence, they opt to break out.
* FantasyForbiddingFather: Despite being an Alchemist himself, Professor Eiselstein refuses to teach his craft to Armony, who instead asks Edward to teach her in secret. [[spoiler:Turns out he has good reason for doing since she ''is'' the Philosopher's Catalyst]].
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Subverted. Edward can create katanas with the right materials, and it turns out to be one of the most effective weapons in the game on top of being one of the few that can be wielded by him and Alphonse. However, they are very fragile and break shortly after repeated use unlike most blades.
* MeaningfulName: The Alchemy Brothers, Gelb, Rot and Blau. Their names are German for "yellow", "red" and "blue" respectively.
* MoreCriminalsThanTargets: Despite being actually populated unlike its predecessor, New Hiessgart is practically deserted during gameplay with the only people seen being enemy alchemists with no actual civilians onsight. They do show up in animated cutscenes, though.
* PosthumousCharacter: Selene Eiselstein. She used to be Ed and Al's friend, but seemed to have died a long time since their last meeting.
* RecurringBoss: Practically every boss in the game is fought more than once, but the biggest example is Major Bresslau, who is fought three times in the game and stronger than before each time.
* WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou: If Alphonse is defeated in combat, Edward can restore him back to life without a problem. But if Edward dies, its game over.
* WolfPackBoss: On their own, Gelb, Rot and Blau are little more capable than their average mooks. But when they fight as one (specially when aided by their living armor minions), they are a hell of a challenge.
* WretchedHive: Even though New Hiessgart doesn't look like it at first glance, it definitely qualifies: its filled with outlaw alchemists, the police is not only corrupt but also apparently went rogue and is tied with terrorist activity.
