Stevonnie must tell them that it's okay for them to be themselves and that they're not as bad as their worst fears make them think they are. ** The Diamonds end up shattered by the Crystal Gems early on, satisfying those who hated them and felt they were let off the hook for their actions (despite never actually being forgiven for their actions canonically).
