Other than 5, all of the previous games closely follow the gameplay of each original game, but began branching out in later games; ''Five Nights at Sonic’s 3'', for instance, while featuring its equivalence of Springtrap (Salvage Sonic) and phantom animatronics (Phantom Mario, Phantom Yoshi, Phantom Tails, Phantom Taingle, Phantom Balloon Toad, and Phantom Luiginette). It also introduces the Withered Toy animatronics of the second game as threats.

* DarkerAndEdgier: The last thing you’d expect to see on any of these Sonic and Mario characters is a single drop of blood on them, but this series has them mangled, bleeding, and murdered.
* DeathByCameo: Phantom Bew in ''Five Nights at Sonic’s 3'' might appear in one of the posters in the cameras. He’s based on Bew, a member from Team Cyantix. The fact he’s a phantom implies he died.

** Dr. Golden is one towards [[Franchise/MegaMan Dr. Wily]], as they make near-identical plans (reprogramming robot with good purposes to do evil), and towards [[VideoGame/SonicForces Infinite]], as they both use the Phantom Ruby to further their goals. HilariousInHindsight in the former case since Dr. Golden is actually Dr. Robotnik, [[VillainousFriendship who is a friend]] [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogMegaManWorldsCollide of Wily's]].

The last game in the series, ''Rockclones: Dr. Golden’s Attack'', is completely different; [[BigBad Dr. Golden]] is going to TakeOverTheWorld with his repurposed toy animatronics. You play as either one of the cloned versions of Sonic, Mario, Yoshi, and Tails to stop his reign of terror in a Mega Man-styled fangame. After a long [[DevelopmentHell development time]] and [=TheCyVap=] relinquishing ownership of the series to [=SmilerFurcifer=], the game was cancelled. However, a sanctioned fangame called ''Rockclones: Powered Up!'' is in the works.

The series also saw its fair share of spin-off games that have been announced, but {{cancel|lation}}ed. Some games were also released, deemed [[CanonDiscontinuity non-canon]], and afterwards deleted include:

* ''[=FNaS=] World'' released on May 2016 and copied the gameplay of Five Nights at Freddy’s World. After going through some iterations, it was deleted.
* ''[=FNaSTale=]'': based off of ''Videogame/{{Undertale}}'', a demo was released, but deleted alongside the game being canceled.
* A trailer for ''Five Nights at Sonic’s: Sister Location'', a game based off of ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddysSisterLocation'' was released, but it was deleted and canceled.
* ''Sonic's Pizzeria Simulator'' released on March 2018 and was based off of ''Videogame/FreddyFazbearsPizzeriaSimulator''. It was released, deleted, reuploaded, and ultimately deleted. [[CanonForeigner Lefty Sonic]], an original character from the game, would [[CanonImmigrant reappear]] as the shop clerk in ''Maniac Mania''. A {{remaster}} of ''Sonic's Pizzeria Simulator'' was in development, and a demo was released for less than a day, but has been deleted. Its artist for the game, meanwhile, moved on to draw for Maniac Mania. Speaking of remasters, the original ''Five Nights at Sonic's'' was intended to get a remaster, but was cancelled.
