* PowerCrystal: Crystal Passives, which were added after Force Time, allow you to power up characters based on their crystal color, with all characters belonging to a specific color of your choosing getting significant stat boosts from them. They also allow said characters to gain access to various powerful EliteTweak passives, with stronger ones of them having [[PowerAtAPrice some kind of a drawback]] to compensate for it: these include persistent extra stat buffs with no downsides, a persistent 20% chance to have your EX gauge filled automatically after your turn but you lose 2 uses of both of your base skills and 2 extra uses of your LD ability with increased HP damage cap but using it doesn't fill your EX gauge and EX has lowered HP damage cap, as well as a number of other effects. Unlocking all the nodes in a Crystal Room completely also gives you a Crystal Skill you can use in battle which have a number of powerful effects and the skills are given in a specific order depending on the number of rooms you have maxed out, but being able to get all of them is a long-term goal due to the slow rate the crystals needed to unlock all the nodes are given out in events.

** When Aerith's Burst released, she saw a huge boost in usage due to being an effective Force Charger with a good Force Echo, and one of her major niches is that she prevents enemies from buffing themselves and inflicting debuffs on the party. Bosses began to have mechanics that granted them these buffs or debuffed the party without it actually being by the boss' hand, allowing LoopholeAbuse to get around Aerith's mechanics. Later bosses then began to have debuff ''auras'' that she can't block.

** [[WhipItGood Whips]] in general being their own weapon type, at well over 150 characters in the game there are currently only three dedicated whip-users; Rydia, Quistis, and Seven (with possibly two more if Izayoi and Harley from ''The After Years'' also have whips). Had whips been introduced later, it is very likely they would have been Unique weapons instead, since there is so little cause for them to have their own entire weapon class all to themselves. This didn't really matter much for the first few years since all higher-tier weapons are locked to that specific character anyway, but with the introduction of Ultima Weapons which are meant to be passed around from character to character since you generally don't have enough resources to make and power up more than one of each type, those 3 characters have severely reduced useability due to their Ultima Weapon pool being vastly smaller than other weapon types, with the next lowest type being bows with 6 different users.

** Since all enemy types are classified as whatever the base type of that enemy that was first added to the game is called and said base enemy type name can be at times overly specific, this comes up often when trying to find a good location to kill a large number of said enemy type for the Chocobo Board missions: for example, instead of there being a general "golem" enemy type, said enemy type is called "plant golem" because that's what the base golem enemy is called and all other enemies of that type will be classified as belonging to the "plant golem" category as well, even if their actual name and appearance are the complete opposite of that base description, such as the enemy in question actually being a broken down robot upper torso. This is taken even further when a new boss enemy is based on an existing enemy but has little to no resemblance to the original enemy, such as one of the Six Warriors fights having a DraconicHumanoid boss armed with a spear that still qualifies as a Black Waltz because his model is a heavily edited version of Black Waltz.

** As bosses became increasingly immune to BRV damage, players began opting for characters that grant the party BRV ("batteries") to get around the handicap. Bosses began reducing BRV Gains as well, though usually they don't penalize one as much as the other. The latest version of this involves having Shinryu bosses limit the amount of BRV that characters can recover from any single source after a HP dump, greatly reducing the effectiveness of characters that rely on it to be able to do large amounts of damage (such as Rinoa's limited-use HP+ attack Ultima, which only deals a single BRV hit between HP dumps and relies on BRV battery to do most of its damage) and forcing the players to use other strategies or use additional forms of BRV battery between HP dumps.

** With the level 80 cap, this is extended to your own characters as well: any crystal level 75 character or higher can respectively Call any other C-level 75 or higher character once per battle to use a predetermined ability without using up their turn that provides that ability's normal effects on the character, party or enemy, with it potentially also having greater effects than the ability normally would when used by that character. Later, the LD ability of a character, if they possess one, can also be used as a separate assist attack, with generally much greater effects. However, all of these are subject to the normal limitation of not being able to use more than a single copy of any character in the party per player, meaning that the 3 active party members and their assists need to be different characters.
