* NoEscapeButDown: You've got to escape the tower complex you've emerged out of CryoPrison from, as [[TrappedWithMonsterPlot its swarming]] with indestructible [[BlobMonster goo animals]] that see you as prey, and want to absorb you.

* PressXToNotDie: Several encounters with a latex BlobMonster will see you spamming the Space or Arrow keys to break free of its grasp before they assimilate you.

* OneHitKill: Virtually every monster in the game can absorb and swallow you up with [[NintendoHard but a mere touch]] and there's almost nothing you can do to fight back as they're [[NighInvulnerability all indestructible]], except run or hide.

* AntiFrustrationFeatures: The Special Edition shows Colin and Puro's relationship towards each other in the save file menu. Useful to keep track of your progress thereby [[spoiler: averting one of the endings where [[AssimilationPlot he forcibly absorbs you]].]]

* HazardousWater: Colin must venture through an entire watery-area to escape the tower complex. Not only [[SuperDrowningSkills can't he swim]], and shallow water hampers his movements, but these flooded generator rooms are ''swarming'' with aquatic latex beasts [[WaterfrontBossBattle and bosses]], lurking in depths to assimilate him.

* AcceptableBreaksFromReality: According to the NonStandardGameOver endings, getting absorbed by a latex goo creature ''takes minutes'', not seconds. To avoid every death in a NintendoHard game dragging on, the player is assimilated instantly whenever caught.

* ThereIsNoCure:
** Any human being infected by the [[ThePlague Pale Virus]] will becoming increasingly sickly and pale-skinned, lapsing in and out of consciousness before its curtains. Desperate, the world leaders and scientists crossed the GodzillaThreshold that was their latex-goo experiments in a last-ditch attempt to cheat death.
** Anyone who is assimilated by the MutagenicGoo latex creatures is ''[[JustifiedTitle changed]]'' by them for keeps. The "transfurmation" process as it became known as by the bioengineers that created them, is permanent and irreversible.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Doctor K is willing to do anything to keep the virus from being re-introduced to the world, and when he suspects Colin of being a possible carrier, he'll resort to imprisonment or forceful transformation to keep him from leaving.]]
