%% Pretty Fears - Sensei asks of Adder's origins; he knows he has some skill, yet never even heard of him before the war in Macro Land, as if he and the other Black Hole COs just spawned out of nowhere. Adder explains it comes from (so many) practice fights, sorting out the competent from the useless. At least that's how Adder became a CO. He doesn't know where Sturm found Hawke, Lash was recruited for her technical skill rather than any tactical ability, and as far as Adder knew, Hawke just promoted Flak on a whim. Sturm pitted all the wannabe commanders against one another in practice fights, and he came out on top. Sensei's evaluation: Adder had been mistreated, pressured to succeed, and after succeeding let it get to his head, making him think he could take on the world... and did, until the world beat him. (Adder agrees with that summation.)

WordOfGod has stated that ''Dual Strike'' won't be canon to this story, but that doesn't mean its characters aren't.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: In this hack, Flak's powers are changed somewhat, wherein his CO Power allows his naval units to cross land for 2 movement cost, and for his direct attack units to have +1 range using his Super CO Power. ''This'' is why Hawke promoted Flak to CO, because he knew there was something special about him.

* BloodKnight: In the aftermath of the first Macro Land conflict, Sonja is revealed to have been becoming this, and she all but confirms it to herself after a bout with Lash. * EnemyMine: Due to the misunderstanding situation, Orange Star finds itself without any allies, and their only available help is... the Black Hole [=COs=] they've sheltered, as well as any possible [=COs=] in the other nations who aren't receptive to the current war [[spoiler:(Colin, Sensei, and Jess)]].

* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: At the start of the mission "Spark to Fire", Drake tries to calm both Eagle and Jess down with a Tsunami, and when that doesn't work and they decide to settle their score in battle, every unit is in 9 HP, as if they were hit by the CO Power.

* HonorBeforeReason: Flak has a warped sense of this. When Hawke [[spoiler:suggests backstabbing all of Wars World in the midst of Orange Star fighting all the other factions]], he isn't having any of it, and won't accept the use of such tactics, preferring to take his foes head on. He comes to blows with Hawke for this in the mission "Former Foe".

to:

** At the start of the ninth mission "Landfall", the Orange Star [=COs=] reference the time Sonja clashed against them back in Cosmo Land, making those scenarios canon to this game's timeline, and wondering why she did them. Sami assumes it had something to do with Sturm.
*** It's also a throwback to the AW1 Yellow Comet missions, in which the Emperor has no bases to deploy more troops (plus no infantry to capture more with), and Andy ''finally'' learning what an airport is (since he allegedly didn't know them back then). When asked by Kanbei what he thinks of Sonja, Andy even mentions the new tools she gave him (which she told Sami were used to lure him back in the AW1 mission "Sami Marches On!")
** References to Flak having a Battleship in the middle of a lake in his Lab Mission and his mistaken idea of "indirect bombers" back in [=AW2=] are seen in his altered CO Powers, where he can make these actually a reality, even if just for a turn.
** One of Colin's CO Power quotes is "If only my sister could see me now!" Said sister is Sasha from ''Dual Strike''.
** During the mission "Pretty Fears", while [[spoiler:Hawke is talking about his plans to take over all the other nations]], he names them in the following order: Orange Star, Blue Moon, Green Earth, Yellow Comet. Just like how their turn order goes in the games whereas most scenarios and dialogs have the last two swapped in their places.

* NotSoDifferentRemark: At the end of "Twisted", Sonja tries to do with Sami what Lash did to her last war and tries to invoke this. The Orange Star CO however was having none of it, realized that Lash has brainwashed Sonja, and intends to spread the word. But the YC CO says this will just reinforce both their sides and change nothing. Sami then realizes she has to convince Sonja to stop this madness in order to stop the war.

* ObfuscatingStupidity: Sonja starts getting paranoid and wonders if Andy is scretly this. This is a hint to her deteriorating state of mind.

* ThePromise: Long ago, [[spoiler:Sensei had made a promise that if Kanbei ever strayed from the way of the samurai, he would topple Yellow Comet once and for all]]. And when Yellow Comet decided to take out Black Hole, then invade Orange Star when it gave sanctum, [[spoiler:Sensei decided to make good on his promise]]. Kanbei argued that he was acting out of national interest to prevent a future threat, but [[spoiler:Sensei chides him for not expecting the entire continent to be plunged in war because of this, and that such logic ceased to apply when Orange Star got involved]].

* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:When Adder realizes he's in support of Sensei because he's strong, and because of that opposes Hawke's underhanded plot to take over all the other nations.]]

* ShipperOnDeck: Because Kanbei sees her gazing at Andy's CO profile, and her hiding it upon him asking, he misunderstands the situation and starts to assume she's falling for Andy. [[MyDaughtersOffLimits But he's not opposed to it, though]]. In fact, he's actually looking open to the idea of them being a future couple for Yellow Comet, misinterpreting him as a brilliant CO from their battles (even though it's more from Kanbei's blunders).

* VerbalTic: Adder tends to hiss a lot, especially in Sensei's presence, which he does find a bit annoying.

* VillainsActHeroesReact: Inverted for once; Sonja convinces her father that they should strike Black Hole first after the war in order to stop them from rising again, and they're forced to retreat... to Orange Star, to ask Andy for asylum. And being the dumb hero that he is, he grants it, though he makes it clear he's not doing this out of impulse.

%% Grit makes another excuse, saying he perferred Blue Moon's rural landscape compared to the hustle and bustle of Orange StarStar

%% Landfall - Due to Max and Sami bust holding off Blue Moon and Green Earth, Andy--IdiotHero that he is--is asked to try and figure out what Sonja's up to. Max expresses his lack of confidence, but since Andy's the only one available...

%% Former Foe - With the current situation instigated by Sonja, Hawke's looking forward to taking all of Wars World under their noses. Flak however isn't having any of it, and won't accept the use of backstabbing tactics, preferring to take his foes head on.
%% Flak was a StreetRat, filled with natural instinct to take command

%% Apparently, the Bolt Guard will show up at some point.

%% A CO's Resolve - Colin wonders if the current war is right, and talks to Grit about it. When the experienced one suggests talking to Olaf about this, it ends with Olaf accusing Colin of treason and ordering his army to hunt him down, forcing the rich CO to escape. Upon escaping, he runs into Max (and Lash, who's baiting Olaf), who says that Orange Star is struggling to keep the attackers out, and they're planning to incite a rebellion within Blue Moon to get some breathing room since Olaf will have to turn his attention to that. And Colin is the lucky candidate.

%% Master's Warning - Sensei is cross with his student invading Orange Star since he wanted to enjoy his vacation. Sonja offers him to just leave it to her and Kanbei and take his vacation anyway, but he decides he'll fight instead... against Yellow Comet.
%% Sensei despises Imperialism. The only reason he didn't topple YC back then was because he got Kanbei the then-young emperor as his pupil. Sensei said that if his student ever strayed from the way of the samurai, he would topple them once and for all. Kanbei argues he hasn't strayed and wished to be preemptive in stopping Hawke. Sensei argues back that that logic ceased to apply once Orange Star got involved.
%% After defeating his old pupil, and forcing Sonja and Kanbei to retreat, Sensei feels lonely having to do this insurgency alone. Then his more previous student Hachi shows up to keep him company. He had retired to open his shop, but Nell came and requested him to talk to Sensei specifically because of their personal connection, though it doesn't seem necessary since Sensei has already started his coup. (And Adder isn't happy to have to tag along with them). Adder feels sorry for Yellow Comet now that they have to face these two legendary [=COs=].

%% Spark to Fire - Jess is butting heads with Eagle again, this time over the reason Green Earth joined in fighting Orange Star (setting an example that Green Earth is not to be messed with). Eagle gets paranoid and thinks Jess is listening to enemy propaganda. Drake tries to drench their hot heads with a Tsunami, but it doens't work and the two decide to settle this in battle.
%% Drake threatens to wash them over again, but Jess invites him to since she can refuel better than Eagle anyway.
%% Jess apparently used to drag-race in tanks.
%% By the end of the day, Jess and Eagle part ways bitter, both intending to do what they intend to do, though Jess doesn't feel confident… Until Sami comes along. The reason Hawke is along for the ride is so that all Black Hole [=COs=] are split up, so that they can't ignore the other nations if they want to achieve their goals.

%% Freedom to Think - Lash goes cray-cray and Max has to fight her to bring her back in line. Max is aware that Lash is Blue Moon's public enemy number one, but he doesn't want Yellow Comet to punish ALL of Black Hole for what their [=COs=]'transgressions. After Lash breaks herself out of her cage and goes building minicannons for driving out Blue Moon,
%% Puzzle battle: Destroy all minicannons in 8 days before Colin comes back.
%% Lash apparently has a "grand finale" in mind and decides to behave so that she doesn't screw up her own eventual role in it. Colin hopes there's something that can be done to help her.

%% Just like in "Former Foe", Hawke wants to backstab all the other nations. And just like in there, Adder is against it, though only because of who's leading the insurgency. Hawke thinks Adder's just fearing Sensei and Hachi's names, but Adder isn't loyal to Hawke, only the strong, and right now Hawke isn't it.
%% After the battle, Sensei claims to have seen the end of it as Adder drove off Hawke. When the defector asks Sensei to teach him, the senior asks why he should take a Black Hole CO who once brought Yellow Comet to its knees as his pupil. Adder answers that fighting for Sturm was all he knew, his whole world. Everything he read about the rest of Wars World was information needed to conquer it. But then his world shattered, and Black Hole ceased to become a superpower, and Adder had just renounced Hawke. He's lost, and needs someone to show him where to go, and believes that if Sensei taught him, he could fundamentally change as a person, then he can spread his teachings to the rest of Black Hole, to give them a sense of purpose. It would depend on what he's taught, but maybe, just maybe that would lead to a purpose that is more than conquest and making people squirm. Sensei says he's too old to take in pupils, but will allow Adder to follow. (Colors determine faction, and Adder now falls under yellow) However, if he would use this for evil, Sensei will wipe his puny existence from the world.

%% Twisted - Sami prepares to intercept Eagle's forces. Jess tells Sami that there are few instances where she's seen Eagle''s face brightens up, and whenever the Orange Star CO is brought up by name, he perks up like a giddy schoolboy. Jess wants to spare the heartache by goin in Sami's stead, but she's resolute and hopes to get him to stop fighting by forcing him to face her (Jess also argues this could also risk him getting over Sami in order to fight on).
%% But instead of Eagle, Sami faces Sonja instead, who knew this might happen and convinced Eagle to hand his troops over to her.

%% Protective Instinct - In response to Colin's insurrection, Olaf orders Grit towards... seizing his family as hostages, only for Grit to say enough is enough and stand up against him.
%% After beating him, Grit warns that this course of action would be no better than when Lash went for Olaf's hometown. Seeing his point, Olaf backs off.
%% And then Max arrives and not only does he misinterpret the situation, he gets the idea to get Grit and Nell together again as a political move.

%% Sailor's Choice - Seeing the uprising Jess is stirring up, Sonja sends Drake to handle her forces. He doesn't want to follow, but has to once Eagle gives the order as a Green Earth CO. Once the naval CO is gone, Sonja decides to have a talk with the air force CO over his crush.
%% In the battle, Jess bemoans her opponent, but Drake has tomeven after hearing Sami's side of the story. He has to anyway in order to suss out the truth... just like he did in the Cosmo Land conflict.

* IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: In the mission "Sweethearts", Nell reveals this is Grit's reason for leaving Orange Star; he didn't want to end up in a LoveTriangle between Max for Nell. After hearing all that, Max was ''absolutely peeved'' at this reasoning. Grit didn't feel like he deserved Nell, and really hoped she and Max would get married after he left.
** [[spoiler:After the mission, Max revealed that ''he'' wanted this for Nell and Grit. They were concocting a plan on getting him to ask the long-range CO out, but he just drew the wrong conclusion, and instead of talking about it like a normal person, he decided to leave. ''Neither Nell nor Max'' were happy with that.]]

* MythologyGag:
** The second mission is called "A Mirror Hauntingly", a CallBack to the mission "A Mirror Darkly".
** At the end of "Once Again", after seeing the complexity of the relationship between Sami and Eagle, Nell wonders what's with Orange Star women and complicated relationships with foreign [=COs=] and decides to call her sister just in case. Said sister is Rachel from ''Dual Strike'', though ironically it would not be her who has any ShipTease with foreign [=COs=], but Jake.
** At the beginning of "Old Lessons", after Nell decided she would face Olaf's forces once again, the Advisor from the first game whom she trained back in the first game is referenced, and is said to be currently holding down the fort in Cosmo Land, which explains their absence in Macro Land. Nell says they should visit sometime after all this.

* SecretTestOfCharacter: Downplayed in that it's not a secret at all, but at the start of ''"Mission 5: Verdict"'', Nell wants a practice match with Andy to prove his resolve to protect the Black Hole refugees ([=COs=] and civilians recently freed from Sturm's tyranny). An extra kicker however is that Andy must not lose five or more units. The kicker is that [[spoiler:win or lose (but you have to win anyway to proceed with the story), Nell always intended to protect the refugees.]] [[spoiler:However, Sonja overhears this, and uses it as a reason to not only wage war against Orange Star, but to involve Green Earth and Blue Moon as well, given their grievances with select Black Hole [=COs=] and that Orange Star wishes to protect ''them''.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler:With his boneheaded decision to leave, not to mention Blue Moon's past and current conflict with Orange Star, it is far too late for Grit and Nell to ever be together. And he figured as much when he asked Nell after the secrets in "Sweethearts" were spilled]].

* VictoryIsBoring: The entire story begins as a result of this feeling for from Sonja. So much so that she decides to ''attack Black Hole first''. And when they seek asylum in Orange Star, rather than negotiate, she not only attacks Andy's troops when he passively gets in the way, she also convinces the other nations to enact their vengeance on Black Hole.

Hole.
* MythologyGag: VillainsActHeroesReact: Inverted for once; Sonja convinces her father that they should strike Black Hole first after the war in order to stop them from rising again, and they're forced to retreat... to Orange Star, to ask Andy for asylum. And being the dumb hero that he is, he grants it, though he makes it clear he's not doing this out of impulse.
* VillainEpisode:
The second mission is called "A Mirror Hauntingly", a CallBack game guarantees you get to play as every CO in the game throughout the Campaign. Including Black Hole [=COs=]. You play as Hawke in ''Mission 3: Transgressions'' against Sonja's pre-emptive attack on his territory.

* YouAreInCommandNow: In the start of
the mission "A Mirror Darkly".
"Old Lessons", Nell reveals that after Olaf's defection (back) to Blue Moon, she had been promoted to commander-in-chief out of nowhere. Despite all the insults she made towards him during the Advisor's Field Training in the first game, she was actually terrified of him.

%% Mission 4: Andy was enjoying his "vacation" to watch the seas towards Black Hole, with a lot of Tanks to maintain to keep himself busy before Hawke's evacuating forces land with Yellow Comet in pursuit. And he's surprised to see they actually have civilians.

%% Mission 5: According to Hawke, he wanted Orange Star to serve as intermediaries and did not want the BH civilians, who were slaves under Sturm before Hawke freed them, to suffer their [=COs'=] transgressions. Nell does have misgivings with giving shelter to the Black Hole COs, but their civilians are at risk too.

%% Orange Star Missions:

%% Once Again - Sami volunteers to face Eagle. Andy is curious as to why. Turns out Eagle's haste to fight Orange Star is because he didn't want to miss out since the other two armies are already coordinating their attacks.
%% (Knowing what Sami is infamous for, he keeps his new Interceptor over his HQ to block it from her Infantry.)

%% Old Lessons - When Sami reports that Olaf's forces approach from the south, Max says his units are out of position, and Andy's units are too far away to help. Nell squares off against Olaf once more. And turns out, her trash talk on him during the Cosmo Land Advisor's Field Training is just bluster to forget how afraid of him she was.
%% Olaf reminisced that people always made fun of him back when he was in Orange Star, laughing at him just out of sight, and finds it ironic that his lucky cadet of all people was the only one who respected and feared him. (Even if he seemed incompetent, serving under him as a cadet at the time could color Nell's perceptions of him.) He faced prejudice in Orange Star due to his origins at Blue Moon, which is why he accepted Sturm's offer.

%% Sweethearts - Nell was put under suspicion for Grit's defection, even after Max defended her, who didn't help her case. She also knows why Grit left, and wanted him to confess, but due to his evasiveness on the matter, she finally decides to let Max know.
%% Grit makes another excuse, saying he perferred Blue Moon's rural landscape compared to the hustle and bustle of Orange Star

'''Advance Wars Story''' is a hack of ''[[VideoGame/NintendoWars Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising]]'' made by [=PlatinumSkink=]. It can be called "Advance Wars Fanfiction" but that, while accurate, sounded bad to the modder. It features a full custom normal campaign comprised of 34 missions, some CO balancing, and a couple of new/modified units such as the naval Destroyer, the naval Dreadnought. No other part of the game was touched.

%% The custom units do not support battle animations and become strange things. If you see that, know it's not an unintended glitch. I can't fix that. You may want to turn off battle animations if you don't want to see that.

%% On the campaign map, the portrait of the next opponent is glitched if it's someone not from Black Hole. I left it like that because occasionally I don't want you to know who you're facing. I CAN fix it, I just won't, heh.
