Nintendo Hard is when the whole game is difficult, not specific level or boss.

* {{Nerf}}: Several of the Death Wish challenges were made easier in later patches, probably due to their [[NintendoHard ridiculous level of difficulty.]] For example, "Bird Sanctuary" initially made it so any bird being killed instantly results in a death for the player. This was later changed so a bird death just results in taking one point of damage, with the OneHitPointWonder run being relegated to a bonus objective (previously a TimedMission).

* PermanentlyMissableContent: As a result of a bug, one rift token inside a giant crate in [[spoiler:Mustache Girl's Castle]] can be permanently lost for good if it ends up falling into the lava below. This can put a detriment to people who are looking for all of these tokens to get prizes from the rift slot machine, and was such a large issue that the token itself had to be removed from the PC version. It's still present in the UsefulNotes/PlayStation4 and UsefulNotes/XboxOne versions though.

** ''Seal the Deal'' adds two items that intentionally invoke the old-school style when worn. The Virtual Kid costume gives Hat Kid a low-polygonal appearance reminiscent of early character models of both UsefulNotes/Nintendo64 and UsefulNotes/PlayStation 1 games, while the Nostalgia Badge closely emulates the fifth generation experience by desaturating textures, making the level geometry more blocky, reducing the camera resolution, and even changing the aspect ratio from widescreen to classic 4:3.
** ''Nyakuza Metro'' adds the Retro badge, and the [=REDtro=] VR badge. The former gives the game a pale green and black color scheme much like the original UsefulNotes/GameBoy does, while the latter gives the game a red and black color scheme akin to the Platform/VirtualBoy.

* AmbiguousSyntax: One of the silly C.A.W. phishing questions in "Murder on the Owl Express: is "what is your uncle's sister's name?", and this "uncle's sister' is then played as a character and murder suspect very clearly represented by a simple wooden standee. The joke behind the phishing question is the fact that someone's uncle's sister could be one of two things--their mother or their aunt, meaning the prompt of "uncle's sister's name" is too vague to expect someone to answer correctly to begin with, and is a totally unnecessary way to refer to someone at all. That said, if you avoid this C.A.W. agent -- thereby missing his question -- the game defaults to calling her "Auntie".

* SurprisinglyCreepyMoment: Queen Act 4 of Subcon Forest, "Queen Vanessa's Manor Manor", is far more twisted than one might expect from, well, the entire rest of the game, playing more like a straight-up startling tonal shift into legitimate horror within a game that's otherwise whimsical and lacking comedically dark, and a chapter that's mostly non-threatening spooky atmosphere. The title card art for act 4 immediately broadcasts serious scares, and the game's typical humor.mood in the manor is tense and frightening hide-and-seek gameplay against a scary invincible antagonist who feels like she's always about to burst in and catch you.

** With the exception of [[BlackAndGrayMorality Vanessa and The Purple Flowers]], pretty much all of Hat Kid’s conflicts are this, as well. Hat Kid is a selfish AntiHero who will help anyone regardless of morality if it means she gets a Time Piece, but she has a [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold heart]]. The people she deals with have just as many good and bad traits: The Mafia are men looking for peace but bully others to gain it, The Conductor and [=DJ=] Grooves are actually nice guys when they aren’t trying to kill for this world’s equivalent of an Oscar, The Snatcher is a spirit broken by the tragedy of his death and lost his moral agency, Mustache Girl is a WellIntentionedExtremist who takes things too far but ''does'' mean well. Even ''[[KnightOfCerebus The Empress]]'' isn't entirely wrong; as ruthless as she is, she grows a fondness for Hat Kid and it's the latter who betrays her trust. Even then, The Empress doesn't dodge responsibility and takes blame for putting so much faith in a girl she just met (even if she still plans on killing her).
* GrimyWater: The thick, purple water covered with screaming faces in Subcon Forest is a variant: rather than damaging you directly, stepping on it will cause hands to rise out and attempt to pull you down, progressively restricting your movement until they succeed or you return to dry land.
