Our protagonist is Dart, a world traveler who returns home atfer a five-year absence, having spent that time hunting the "Black Monster" which killed his parents and burned his hometown to the ground. Upon returning to his adopted home of Seles, he finds things haven't changed much: it's now the jackbooted thugs of Imperial Serdio burning down his home, instead. Serdio also has a dragon called Feyrbrand at its disposal, which nearly makes mincemeat of Dart before he's saved by an enigmatic female swordsman, Rose. With his childhood friend, Shana, thrown into a Serdio gulag, it's up to Dart to break her out, all the while looking for clues to the Black Monster's whereabouts. His dogged companion is Rose, who hints at Dart being a hereditary Dragoon, warriors who can tame the dragons now being used as weapons of war. A mere human can't hope to last against a dragon; but a Dragoon can.

Despite an unenthusiastic critical response, the game sold well and went on to become a CultClassic, with a {{troperiffic}} plot that manages to shift smoothly between humor, [[NarmCharm Narm]], and some genuinely moving moments. At the end of the day, it's about [[Franchise/SuperSentai Sentais]] versus [[OurDragonsAreDifferent dragons]], so that's pretty awesome.

The game tells the story of Dart, who has been wandering the world for the past five years searching for the being who [[ParentalAbandonment killed his parents]] and [[DoomedHometown destroyed his hometown]]: the Black Monster. While traveling back to his adopted home of Seles, he is suddenly attacked by the legendary dragon Feyrbrand, and survives only through the intervention of a mysterious [[LadyOfWar warrior woman]] named Rose. When Dart arrives at Seles, he discovers that the town has been attacked by the army, and his childhood friend Shana has been kidnapped.

This sets the stage for ''The Legend of Dragoon'''s plot, which begins as a simple DamselInDistress story while Dart tries to rescue Shana, but quickly becomes a larger story concerning the fate of nations, peoples, and eventually the entire world. Dart must unravel the mysteries surrounding the dragoons, the mythical Dragon Campaign that took place 11,000 years ago, and the events happening in the world around him.

Despite an unenthusiastic critical response, the game sold fairly well. An engaging battle system that allowed characters to perform "[[{{Combos}} Additions]]" via well-timed ActionCommands was a big success, as was a {{troperiffic}} plotline that manages to shift smoothly between genuinely moving, NarmCharm, and SoBadItsGood. The latter was helped by an [[BlindIdiotTranslation inconsistent localization]], but the game does manage an impressive amount of [[PlayingWithATrope playing with tropes]] given its otherwise ClicheStorm story of [[TheChosenOne a young man]] with a [[SecretArt mysterious power]] embarking on an [[TheHerosJourney epic quest]] in a StandardFantasySetting. Oh, and there are [[OurDragonsAreDifferent dragons]], too, so that's pretty awesome.

Fondly remembered as one of the last big games of the [=PlayStation=] era, ''The Legend of Dragoon'' is something of a CultClassic, with a small but loyal fanbase even years after its release.
