My favorite genre is ScienceFiction. I prefer the hard end of MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness. A story set on a spaceship does not a scifi story make. Yes, I will happy take a good plot with sound science that stands on its own universe even if the characters are boring and flat! I'm also a huge fan of [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Apocalyptic Fiction]] - but I don't follow it as much as I used to. Having kids makes the idea of scrounging for necessities rather sour.

For a period of five years I had a banner up saying that I was on hiatus. Why? Well, I'm putting a PublicServiceAnnouncement here about something nobody talks about, but should. I was on hiatus because I was serving Federal prison time for one count of possession of child pornography. I doubt this is too much of a surprise, after all I obviously started the UsefulNotes/{{Pornography}} page because I'm knowledgeable on the topic.

Anyway, to anyone who is struggling with or freely uses illegal pornography, let me tell you that the authorities ''do not care'' how you've never actually committed any hands on offenses or are a parent in a family that was totally unaware of your private wanderings online. '''Prison time is a practical certainty, if caught.''' I got five years, and that was down from being up against eight - and they went easy on me! I had to spend thousands of dollars in restitution to the victims in the pictures. I had letters from family and friends in my support, and family stood up for me in court. However even though my story never hit the news and they went easy on me '''it still ripped my family apart''', and my kids had to deal with heckling at school because of something REALLY stupid their father did, not them.

In addition to not seeing my family and friends while in prison, as a {{Troper}} (something which will hit closer to home with you) it was several years of having to watch movies from the back of a room on a tiny TV screen, and missing multiple series and films that I wanted to see. No Internet access. Limited to the books from our donation-only library and an encyclopedia published in 1996.

If you are using illegal porn, '''you should stop today''' if you can. I know that's hard, and I don't know any magic way to do that, plus finding a therapist for this is hard as they're required to report it - but this really is serious shit. If you do find yourself caught, don't do anything stupid like fight back or end your life - prison sucks, but it's survivable. I'm proof of that.

What should you do? As said before, stop using and looking for illegal pornography (and ''never'' produce or distribute - those carry MUCH longer sentences than 8 years). Also support FAMM (Families Against Mandatory Minimums), NARSOL (For rational sex offender laws), and criminal justice reforms (if you think the authorities are too hard on posession). Write to your congressman, though I understand that's a terrifying prospect.
