* DuelingMovies: With ''WesternAnimation/SharkTale'' because they are ocean/fish animated themed kids movies released in the Fall of 2004.

* MoneyDearBoy: A Hilarious double subversion happened with Dee Snider from Music/TwistedSister. When he first heard that the movie's producers wanted to license "I Wanna Rock", he was totally on board because of the licensing fees involved, but when he heard that they wanted to change the lyrics into the now-infamous "Goofy Goober Rock", he was incredulous, as he felt it would detract from the art of the song. That is, until he heard that the producers of the movie were willing to shell out $300,000. As Snider himself put it, "I'm a whore, but I'm an expensive whore." It helped that Snider had two children in college at the time, so he was more than happy to accept that amount of money.

* PromotedFangirl: Though she didn't realize who he was at the time, Creator/ScarlettJohansson is reportedly a huge fan of ''WesternAnimation/RockosModernLife'' and had a {{fangirl}} moment when she found out that most of the crew had previously worked on it. Creator/MrLawrence even dipped into his Filbert voice for her, much to her delight.

* WordOfGod: According to Stephen Hillenburg and some of the show and movie writers, this movie takes place at the end of the ''[=SpongeBob=]'' mythos despite how many episodes and movies came out after the film's release. It makes sense, seeing that this was meant to be the series finale.

* ColbertBump: The song Ocean Man by Ween was popularized by this movie (and gained a MemeticMutation status), due to it being featured in the credits.

It wasn't until 2015 when Creator/{{Paramount}} and Nickelodeon agreed to use elements from the movie to appear on the show like the above mentioned Goofy Goober and his restaurant later appearing in episodes like "The Goofy Newbie". Likewise, Mindy would later make a brief non-speaking cameo in the special [=SpongeBob=]'s Big Birthday Blowout".
* InMemoriam: The movie is dedicated to Jules Engel, who taught Hillenberg at the California Institute of the Arts.

* TypeCasting: Victor the Thug Tug owner is voiced by Creator/ThomasFWilson, best known for playing bully Biff Tannen in ''Film/BackToTheFuture'' and its sequels. ** Showtime and its' sister networks love airing this movie, to the point where as of 2021, it's the only animated movie aired across their networks. It's worth noting that their adoration of the film has been going on since they first got the rights 16 years ago.

** The Japanese dub has a different cast than the main series' dub. Most noticeably, Plankton is voiced by a male actor (Creator/YuichiNagashima), whereas he's typically [[CrossDressingVoices voiced by a woman]] in the actual series. ** There was a deleted scene where [=SpongeBob=] and Patrick would meet Sandy on land implying she moved away from Bikini Bottom some time ago but she was also being chased by government agents for some strange reason. This was changed to due to censors being displeased at how much Patrick vomited due to how gross he and [=SpongeBob=] thought she looked on land as they reunited. Others say it was removed because it didn't really add anything to the film and just slowed down the pacing unnecessarily. In the same deleted scene, Shell City was actually a city and there were buses that traveled between there and Bikini Bottom.
