Context Trivia / TheSpongeBobSquarePantsMovie

Go To

* AdoredByTheNetwork:
** It's no secret that Creator/{{Nickelodeon}} loves to play this movie on random weeknights and weekends, usually as filler where they couldn't fit more episodes of [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants the show]], and it's a regular during ''[=SpongeBob=]'' marathons. This only seems to die down whenever a premium cable network or a popular streaming service gets the broadcasting/streaming rights, but when they lose it or a service takes it down, Nickelodeon goes back to doing the same thing they always do. And when they don't have the rights, Nick will usually just do the exact same shtick with [[WesternAnimation/TheSpongeBobMovieSpongeOutOfWater it's sequel]].
** Showtime and its sister networks love airing this movie, to the point where as of 2021, it's the only animated movie aired across their networks. It's worth noting that their adoration of the film has been going on since they first got the rights 16 years ago.
* BillingDisplacement: Clancy Brown is billed second after Tom Kenny, despite Mr. Krabs spending a portion of the film frozen. Patrick's voice, Bill Fagerbakke, is billed ''fourth.''
* CelebrityVoiceActor: In addition to Creator/ClancyBrown reprising his role as Mr. Krabs from the show, the movie has three other big name actors playing specific characters in the film: Creator/ScarlettJohansson as Princess Mindy, Creator/JeffreyTambor as King Neptune and Creator/AlecBaldwin as Dennis.
* ColbertBump: The song "Ocean Man" by Music/{{Ween}} was popularized by this movie (and gained a MemeticMutation status), due to it being featured in the credits.
* DeletedScene: In the special features of the DVD and Blu-Ray releases, there's 20 minutes of animatics, including the extended opening (the one of the trailer), Bob and Patrick meeting Sandy in the real world and more.
* DescendedCreator: Writer and storyboard artist Creator/MrLawrence as Plankton, as in the show. Stephen Hillenburg, the movie's director, voices the parrot who tells the pirates to look at the screen when [=SpongeBob=] and Patrick are being resurrected by the sprinklers.
* DuelingMovies: With ''WesternAnimation/SharkTale'', another aquatic animated film released in the fall of 2004.
* ExiledFromContinuity: One that took 15 years to be lifted. [[https://mobile.twitter.com/VincentWaller72/status/1114208160208674816 According to Vincent Waller]], there was once a firewall between content created for this film and the Nickelodeon created characters, hence why the movie's version of King Neptune and other characters created for it don't pop up in the show. Even images of Goofy Goober and the exterior of the restaurant were barred from being used for a while, though mentions of him in the show were still okay. It wasn't until 2015 when Creator/{{Paramount}} and Nickelodeon agreed to use elements from the movie to appear on the show like the above mentioned Goofy Goober and his restaurant later appearing in episodes like "The Goofy Newbie". Mindy would later make a brief non-speaking cameo in the special "[=SpongeBob=]'s Big Birthday Blowout", while a redesigned Dennis appeared as a minor speaking character in "Captain Pipsqueak", ironically [[TheOtherDarrin recast]] with Creator/ClancyBrown, Mr. Krabs' voice actor, in the role.
* FirstAppearance:
** Of Perch Perkins, the news reporter. who had InconsistentColoring as a result of the firewall with Paramount between the film and the show.
** This movie also introduces Goofy Goober's and everything related to it.
* GodNeverSaidThat: It's assumed by many that the movie was meant to be the chronological finale for the series, with every episode after Season 4 actually happening ''before'' the film in the timeline. However, as actual WordOfGod states (by the current showrunner Vincent Waller and other crew members), that this was [[https://www.looper.com/294841/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-spongebob-squarepants-timeline/ never the case]] and then explained how the show runs on NegativeContinuity. Thus, anything can happen that revokes this possibility.
* KidsMealToy: Burger King sold a set of twelve different toys during the film's theatrical release. There was also an incident where people stole the [=SpongeBob=] inflatables intended to promote the movie from the roofs of select restaurants.
* InMemoriam: The movie is dedicated to Jules Engel, who mentored Stephen Hillenberg at the California Institute of the Arts.
* MilestoneCelebration: The film was released during the show's 5th anniversary.
* MissingTrailerScene: [[http://youtu.be/Vv6MZ8piuUY?t=21s The improperly made Krabby Patty opening scene had a few things that]] [[https://youtu.be/IZbG27CAxG0?t=3m15s ended up being cut from the final product.]]
* MoneyDearBoy: A hilarious double subversion happened with Dee Snider from Music/TwistedSister. When he first heard that the movie's producers wanted to license "I Wanna Rock", he was totally on board because of the licensing fees involved, but when he heard that they wanted to change the lyrics into the now-infamous "Goofy Goober Rock", he was incredulous, as he felt it would detract from the art of the song. That is, until he heard that the producers of the movie were willing to shell out $300,000. As Snider himself put it, "I'm a whore, but I'm an expensive whore." It helped that Snider had two children in college at the time, so he was more than happy to accept that amount of money.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Jeffrey Tambor voices King Neptune instead of Creator/JohnOHurley, though this King Neptune is a different character than the one who's usually seen in the show.
** The German dub has Antje Von Der Ahe voicing Karen instead of Susanne Geier.
** Mostly averted in the Latin American Spanish dub. The film was meant to be dubbed in Mexico rather than the usual Venezuela, but the recording unfortunately coincided with the ANDA strike against Grabaciones y Doblajes (you know, the one that caused ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' to be recast). As a result, it was ultimately decided that the film should be dubbed in Venezuela with most of the cast [[RoleReprise reprising their roles]] except Paul Gillman as Patrick due to his retirement from dubbing to continue his music career; Alfonso Soto took over since then. Creator/DavidHasselhoff was dubbed by Juan Alfonso Carralero, his usual voice at the time, from Mexico.
** The Japanese dub has a different cast than the main series' dub. Most noticeably, Plankton is voiced by a male actor (Creator/YuichiNagashima), whereas he's typically [[CrossDressingVoices voiced by a woman]] in the actual series. [=SpongeBob=] is voiced by Creator/TaikiMatsuno, who has continued to voice him since, and Patrick is voiced by Creator/TakashiNagasako.
** [=SpongeBob=] himself and Plankton were recast for the Hungarian dub. The former because his original actor Péter Minárovits quit voice acting for a time and was replaced with a soundalike, the then 14 year-old Creator/IstvanBarath. Plankton's original actor György Vizy passed away shortly before release, so Gábor Németh inherited the role.
* PromotedFangirl: Though she didn't realize it when she was cast, Creator/ScarlettJohansson is reportedly a huge fan of ''WesternAnimation/RockosModernLife'' and had a {{fangirl}} moment when she found out that most of the crew had previously worked on it. Creator/MrLawrence even dipped into his Filbert voice for her, much to her delight.
* RealLifeRelative: Mark Osborne, the director for the live-action sequences, is the younger brother of co-writer Kent Osborne.
* RecycledSet: The pirate ship at the beginning? That's the HMS Bounty, which was built for ''Film/MutinyOnTheBounty1962''.
* SoMyKidsCanWatch: Alec Baldwin took the role of Dennis because his children were fans of the show.
* TypeCasting: Victor the Thug Tug owner is voiced by Creator/ThomasFWilson, best known for playing bully Biff Tannen in ''Film/BackToTheFuture1'' and its sequels. Previously, Wilson voiced several [[CharacterOfTheDay characters of the day]] in ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' that were of a similar ilk, including Flats the Flounder in the "The Bully", Reg the Salty Spitoon's bouncer in "No Weenies Allowed" and the titular Tattletale Strangler from "[=SpongeBob=] Meets the Strangler".
