Jackie talked them into removing it because not only was it inconsistent with his character (who to that point had no problem using firearms), but also a major TooDumbToLive moment when surrounding by people who wanted him dead. In the finished movie, the matter is avoided by having his hands covered in tape so he can't use any weapons either way.
