** In an early version of the story, Alexia and Alfred Ashford were originally neo-Nazis known as Hilda and Hilbert Krueger, respectively. The concentration camp-esque design of the initial stages of the facility likely meant that a German nationality was a step too far in context, and so the antagonists were changed to EvilBrit twins instead, deadening the overt Nazi vibe and associated implications somewhat.

** Rumor has it that Leon S. Kennedy was at one point going to be Claire's partner in this game and also die near the end. Creator/Capcom quickly realized how bad an idea it would be to kill off such a well-liked character and turned him into the new character named Steve Burnside instead (if true, this would explain why Steve looked so similar to Leon in the original release).

** Jill Valentine was originally intended as the game's protagonist. However, when Hideki Kamiya added the last line to the VideoGame/ResidentEvil2 ending to suggest Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield would go on a quest to fight Umbrella, writer Noboru Sugimura was forced to replace her with Claire. The freedom of the character thus allowed the Resident Evil 3 staff to use Jill.

Not true. The RE 4 that became Devil May Cry was the number 3. They moved the numbers because it was moved to the PS 2 so would take a few years extra, and Capcom wanted a number right away.

** This game was originally intended to be Resident Evil 3, with Nemesis being developed as a GaidenGame. However, once development moved to the Dreamcast, Capcom retroactively made Nemesis the third numbered installment in order to lump the UsefulNotes/PlayStation games together as a trilogy.

Moving to Shout Out subpage.

* ShoutOut:
** An early scene in the Rockfort Island training facility involving a survivor in a hazard suit getting crushed against an observation window while Claire watches helplessly is an almost shot-for-shot homage to Return of the Living Dead III. The Bandersnatches were also supposedly based off of the zombie that was in that scene.
** The name 'Bandersnach' comes from Lewis Carroll's work.
** Alfred acting as Alexia is just like Psycho Norman Bates.
** Wesker's LightningBruiser moves are a shout out to TheMatrix. Also, in an ode to Terminator, his eyes flash red behind his sunglasses in one cutscene.
*** Another Matrix shout-out is when Steve does a BulletTime SuperWindowJump to save Claire from a Bandersnatch.
** There are a couple shout outs to MetalGearSolid, such as where Alfred aims his sniper rifle at Claire and when Wesker gets a call on a "codec".
** Alexia's second OneWingedAngel mutation resembles the breeding form of the Queen Alien from Aliens, with its blob-like ovipositor which she separates from for her final form.
