* WhatCouldHaveBeen: At one point a UsefulNotes/PlaystationVita version of the game was in development that would have combined both the ''Replicant'' and ''Gestalt'' versions into a single game, but was cancelled because Square wanted to focus more development time and effort towards ''VideoGame/DragonQuestX''.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: At Originally, the game was going to have a fairy tale theme, [[http://something-very-special.tumblr.com/post/24669007400/concept-art-weiss featuring a young boy collecting 13 grimoires in a quest to save a mysterious girl.]] Leftovers of this concept still exist in the final game, not only with the grimoires but with the fact that many characters and bosses are named after famous stories and fairytales such as the shade [[Literature/PeterPan Hook]].

* ExecutiveMeddling: There are conflicting stories about which one came first, but the gist of it is the fact that one of the Niers (most likely father Nier) was created to appeal more to one of the markets, the idea being that Brother Nier would be more in line with Japan's tastes and dad Nier more in line with the west's. This seems to have paid off; while some people prefer brother Nier for various reasons, father Nier is much more popular with western fans of the game due to a father-daughter story being perceived as more primal and powerful and the relative scarcity of playing as an older protagonist in JRPG's, making this a case of TropesAreNotBad.

* NoExportForYou: As mentioned above, while there are two versions of the game in Japan, ''Replicant'' never made it to the states; western releases had ''Gestalt'' on both the [=PS3=] and the Xbox 360.

** In an odd twist of fate, Emi Evans only ended up doing the vocal work for the game because Keiichi Okabe was commissioned for ''VideoGame/DanceDanceRevolution'' and the song the two made together didn't make the cut.
