* OldShame: Kishimoto admitted in this interview that he regrets adding "the messy LoveTriangle" between Hinata/Naruto/Sakura because: 1) Naruto is a battle manga, not a romance story, and 2) despite the Red Herrings that he placed throughout the manga to mess with the shippers, he never thought about making Naruto and Sakura a couple, because they were going to be just friends and teammates; it was all about [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata]] getting together since the early stages of the manga.

Compared to all of this, the truth is ridiculously banal; the OfficialCouple got together in the usual way that fictional couples do -- because the author decided, from the early stages of the manga, that it would be great if they were to fall in love, so they did. No reservations, no cynical "yeah, but"s about it. Some of the "true" alternate explanations were just fabricated whole-cloth; others were "inspired" by actual WordOfGod that had little resemblence to them, and instead described considerations that are much less scandalous and are par-for-the-course for the occasion. e.g. "if this character doesn't get with this other character her entire arc becomes kind of pointless", or "the decision to go this way was made long ago anyway, I toyed with other possibilities for a while just to throw fans off".
** Kishimoto's involvement with the production of the movie Anime/NarutoTheMovieRoadToNinja which is heavily loaded with Naruto/Sakura ShipTeasing, made a lot of their shippers to claim that "The movie is Kishi's baby written by him, that means he supports the ship!"; in reality, Kishimoto was only involved with the characters' designs and story draft, while the actual script of the movie was done by Yuka Miyata, who was infamous for her Naruto/Sakura-teasing scene additions to the anime filler that didn't exist in the manga (although she stopped doing this after the manga ended, for obvious reasons).
