* AllStarCast: Creator/HughJackman (Valjean), Creator/RussellCrowe (Javert), Creator/AnneHathaway (Fantine), Creator/SachaBaronCohen (Thénardier), Creator/HelenaBonhamCarter (Mme. Thénardier), Creator/EddieRedmayne (Marius), Creator/AmandaSeyfried (Cosette), Samantha Barks (Éponine), and Creator/AaronTveit (Enjolras). In addition, Colm Wilkinson plays the Bishop of Digne while Frances Ruffelle and many other former cast members have cameos.

** Before Samantha Barks reprised her role as Eponine for the film, Creator/LeaMichele, Creator/ScarlettJohansson (who also auditioned for the role of Fantine), Creator/EmilyBrowning, Creator/HaydenPanettiere, Creator/LucyHale, Creator/EvanRachelWood, and ''Music/TaylorSwift'' (of all people) were considered for the role.

* RetroactiveRecognition: This is a ''very'' early screen role for West End luminary Creator/HannahWaddingham, who is in the ensemble as one of the factory workers in "Lovely Ladies".

* CreatorBacklash: Amanda Seyfriend stated in 2021 that she regretted her performance as Cosette, and found her singing so weak that after the film she worked harder to strengthen her voice.

* OldShame: An interview with Creator/AmandaSeyfried revealed that she was disappointed in her performance and singing as Cosette.

* StarMakingRole: For Creator/EddieRedmayne. In fact, most people had never heard of him when his casting was announced. Jackman, Crowe, Hathaway, Baron Cohen, Bonham Carter and Seyfried were all recognizable film stars, while Barks and Tveit, at least, were big names in the theater community.

** For the film Creator/AnneHathaway had her hair cut short on camera and lost 25 pounds to make it look like she was dying. She refused to say how she lost so much weight in fear that other women would attempt her near-fatal methods for superficial reasons.

* CutScene: Much more of the wedding scene was shot instead of the Thenardiers simply being thrown out on their ear.

* MisBlamed: Crowe's singing. There's some footage of him preparing for the role, and some more from after the movie came out, and he actually doesn't sound that bad. He also used to be in a band. The guy can actually sing; not on a Broadway leading man level, but fine enough for a movie musical. It's more to do with how they recorded it. They did all the sound recording live on set. Not before or after in a studio, but while filming the movie. The director made them do countless takes in crappy conditions, which just resulted in crappier singing. They also didn't use a backing track or metronome while recording (the director didn't want it to 'feel like' a musical), instead making the orchestra play around the non-existing meter of the actors.

Creator/EddieRedmayne also auditioned for the role because Tom Hooper wanted a young 17-year-old for the role of Marius, but he ultimately cast Redmayne as Marius and Creator/AaronTveit as Enjolras[[note]]Interestingly, Tveit is only one year younger than Redmayne[[/note]].

* ActorAllusion: [[Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet Mrs. Lovett and Pirelli]] ([[OohMeAccentsSlipping whose accent is, of course, all over the place]]) have hidden compartments all over the place and are seen stuffing "this and that" into a giant meat grinder with a false leg. [[Film/MammaMia Sophie]] has to deal with a loving but somewhat mysterious parent.

** Before Creator/AmandaSeyfried was cast as Cosette, Creator/EmmaWatson, Creator/ShaileneWoodley, Creator/MirandaCosgrove, Emily Marie Palmer, [[Series/{{Riverdale}} Lili Reinhart]], Portia Doubleday, and Danielle Hope auditioned for the role.
** Creator/RowanAtkinson, Billy Crystal, Creator/RickyGervais, Creator/SteveMartin, Creator/RobinWilliams, and Creator/GeoffreyRush (who portrayed Javert in the non-musical ''Film/LesMiserables1998'') were considered for the role of Monsieur Thénardier.

* UnderageCasting: Jean Valjean lived to be sixty-four, Hugh Jackman was twenty-years younger and there was no effort to make him look older.
