There is no indication that Garfield imitated Heathcliff, based on the history of Garfield. Pretty much the only thing they have in common are that they are orange cats, and Heathcliff isn't really fat in the first appearance. In fact, Heathcliff has more in common with Marmaduke (who debuted earlier) than Garfield, in that both are animals that have an infamous reputation in their neighborhood, plus their comic formats are similar: both of them have single panel weekdays and multi panel Sundays with a short user-submitted pet story at the end.

* RecycledScript: ''Exploited.'' The strips for January 26 and 28 of 2021 were identical in content, but drawn slightly differently. In the same week, on the 25th, 27th and 29th, the same setup was used with one item swapped out - in each, Heathcliff was on a therapist's couch, with said therapist saying "Let's talk about ___", referencing something sitting next to Heathcliff. Robots, Chihuahuas, and Ham, respectively. With Gately's odd sense of humor, this was certainly deliberate.
