* HostilityOnTheSet: Though this isn't the [[Film/AguirreTheWrathOfGod the first time]] (nor the last) it happened between Werner Herzog and Creator/KlausKinski, the hostility between the latter and the native extras was so great that one of the native chiefs who played an extra offered Herzog to kill Kinski for him. ''Herzog seriously considered it'', though ultimately backed down.

No explicit evidence about valuing art over profit.

* DoingItForTheArt: Possibly ''the'' most epic RealLife example. There was no other reason for Creator/WernerHerzog to pull this dangerous and crazy stunt.

* TheOtherMarty: Jason Robards had already filmed about half his scenes as Fitzcarraldo before his doctor ordered him to quit, leaving a few brief clips in ''Burden of Dreams'' as the only surviving footage of his performance (as well as Music/MickJagger's). Judging from those clips, Robards seems to have played Fitzcarraldo as a blustery {{Schemer}} (reminiscent of his turn in the title role of ''Film/TheBalladOfCableHogue''), as opposed to Creator/KlausKinski's obsessive, slow-burning oddball.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Originally Fitzcarraldo was played by Robards and had [[Music/TheRollingStones Mick Jagger]] as an assistant. After they pulled out (Robards got very sick and his doctor forbade him to return, and Jagger couldn't stay with the film throughout its numerous delays while also keeping his commitments with the Stones), Herzog considered using Creator/JackNicholson and even himself in the titular role.

* GodzillaThreshold: Herzog had huge problems with Klaus Kinski on ''Film/AguirreTheWrathOfGod'' and ''Film/{{Nosferatu}}'' and had not considered him at all for Fitzcarraldo. When Jason Robards was unable to return to the jungle Herzog turned to Kinski in desperation.
