* ThrowItIn: A fan wrote Sakaguchi a letter asking if the title Final Fantasy was an English translation of Grand Illusion [note]Kyukyoku Gensou, Final Fantasy written in kanji[/note]. Sakaguchi denied this but said that he hopes to use it one day and is indeed used in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII''.

* MagnumOpusDissonance: Hironobu Sakaguchi considers ''IX'' the best title in the series. The game received mixed reactions and sold the least copies of all the UsefulNotes/PlayStation installments of the franchise. However, it has since became [[VindicatedByHistory vindicated]] by fans and is the highest-rated [=PS1=] entry of the franchise on Metacritic, so perhaps time showed Sakaguchi to be right.

* IAmNotShazam: An unusual case of the series doing this to itself, at least a term in it. It's commonly accepted that the various ''Final Fantasy'' worlds form a multiverse connected by the Void, the space between the dimensions. However, when ''Final Fantasy V'' introduced the Void as a concept, it was treated like a source of power wielded by the warlock Enuo and later Exdeath, and the Void itself was sealed in the Interdimensional Rift between the two worlds. Ergo, it's the Interdimensional Rift that is actually the VoidBetweenTheWorlds, and the Void is closer to TheNothingAfterDeath. Most games since that reference the concept of the Rift tend to refer to it interchangeably as either the Rift or the Void, but it is more commonly called the Void now. Granted, this isn't helped by ''V'' itself not always distinguishing clearly between the Rift and the Void, so there was already a degree of confusion.

** ''VideoGame/PanzerDragoon Saga'' was made to go up against ''VII'' and be the KillerApp RPG for the UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn. Unfortunately, ''Saga'' was released late into the Saturn's life, so it never stood a chance.
