* WorkingTitle: ''Alfred Packer: The Musical''. Creator/LloydKaufman convinced Trey Parker to change the title because, though Packer is well-known in Colorado, very few outside of the state know who he is.

* CutSong: Two songs that were originally going to be in the film, but later taken out, were "Shatterproof", a rap song to be sung by Packer during the bar fight scene, and "Don't Be Stupid", a song to be sung by some of the Bingham Canyon miners after the reprise of "Shpadoinkle". An interview with Ian Keldin revealed that Trey thought "Shatterproof" made Packer seem too tough.

* LoopingLines: At the opening of the scene at the saloon near the end, the sound had been lost. When they went into ADR the scene, they didn't know what everyone had said and had to improvise. "Drink-ee-poo" came out of this improvisation.

* RealLifeRelative: Trey Parker's father Randy played the judge.

* [As heard in the commentary]The line "...But that's not the way it happened..." is actually from the series ''Franchise/StarTrek''. Creator/TreyParker thought it would be funny to throw the line in.

* CreatorBreakdown: The whole Liane subplot was inspired by Parker walking in on his fiance of the same name having sex with another man a month before their wedding. He apparently kept her in the dark about this subplot considering that she helped him choreograph the dancing.
* LifeImitatesArt: At the end of the film Packer [[spoiler: decides he doesn't need Liane after finding love with Polly Pry]]. In real life Trey Parker decided he didn't need his ex Liane after finding love with Toddy Walters the actress who plays Polly Pry, though they had recently broken up when Parker recorded the DVD commentary, and he wasn't exactly subtle about the wounds still hurting.
--> '''Trey''': Yeah, we got together a little while after this shoot, and we were stayed together for a good 6 or 7 years, until about a month or so ago when I ''fucked it up''! '''''I fucked it up!'''''

* ThrowItIn:
** The sheriff says "YouKnowWhatTheySay about sunrise?" then pauses and walks off without making his point. The actor was apparently drunk and forgot his lines, but Trey Parker thought it was funnier than the actual line.
* WriteWhatYouKnow / SmallReferencePools: Trey Parker originally attended Berklee College of Music as a film scoring major before returning to Colorado to finish his education, so the song-stopping argument about music theory is a rather funny in-joke for music majors.

* PermanentPlaceholder: The word "Shpadoinkle" was originally a placeholder for the song "It's a Shpadoinkle Day," but when Trey Parker first played the song for friends they loved the word so much that it was kept.

** "Shpadoinkle" was at first just a silly placeholder word in the song, but Trey and Matt ended up liking it so much they kept it in.

** Much of the Liane subplot was meant to be a TakeThat to Parker's ex, especially the line where Packer says, "She couldn't have just taken off. We're friends, and friends don't just take off!"

* ThrowItin: A couple of examples according to the commentary:
** When Trey Parker was first writing the song "Shpadoinkle", the title was was just a nonsensical bit of filler he intended to replace with a real word later. But everyone seemed to like "shpadoinkle", so it stayed in the song and became a running gag.
** When the Sheriff of Lake City gloats to Packer about his upcoming hanging at sunrise, he says "You know what they say about sunrise..." and abruptly wanders off camera without finishing his thought: This was apparently the drunken actor forgetting his lines and just walking away, but it was decided that leaving it a complete NonSequitur would be funnier than the actual punchline in the script.
