** AndSomeOtherStuff: In "Lesser Evil." Michael's explosive recipes contain just enough to tantalize Series/MythBusters and brush over the rest to avoid liabilities. Usually. Sometimes it's just to handwave that an explosion is a bit larger than should be expected.

* TechnicalAdvisor: Michael Wilson worked as a consultant on the show regarding the inner workings of CIA missions and how spies operate. It is likely the main character Michael Westen was Tuckerization named after him. Show creator and showrunner Matt Nix has explained that nearly every episode involves them coming up with a scenario to put the characters through and then asking advice from Wilson on how he would go about the situation himself.

* TechnologyMarchesOn: Played with in episode 5 of season 4 where Michael is stymied by a dated data storage tape.
--> Fiona "14 phone calls, 7 data-recovery experts, and three hours of arm-twisting to even access this drive, and it's unreadable!"
** Michael isn't up to date with the latest spy gadgets largely because he doesn't have the money for it, but before he was burned he spent a lot of time in places where smartphones and computers are luxuries. Once he asked a client for their yellow pages to look up the nearest hardware store and the guy responds, "Bro! I've got a computer!"
** This happens out-of-universe, too. The series came just before the explosion in popularity of smart phones, which would have ended quite a few plots in minutes. Instead of scrambling to place bugs and G.P.S. equipment, mad dashes across town to turn cell phones into bugs, or triangulating from cell towers, in just a very short span of time they could have just tapped a few buttons and downloaded an app or two, to be done with it.

** Also, in "Fast Friends," Sam mentions that he once got to the "Michigan State Quarterfinals" with his arm (shot put? football?); Bruce Campbell is originally from Michigan (the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, to be exact).

** Several episodes haven been directed by Jeffrey Donovan and when he's not, he also acts as a producer.
** Tim Matheson (who plays "Dead" Larry Sizemore) has actually directed more episodes of the show than he's acted in.

* ActorAllusion:
** Sam and Fiona approach a group of con artists while under the guise of federal agents who had been monitoring them. Sam introduces himself and Fi as detectives Series/CagneyAndLacey, alluding to costar Sharon Gless.
** Additionally, in the second season Fiona starts dating a man named Campbell. In one episode, a conversation between Fiona and Sam takes place, with Fiona commenting on how good-looking a particular man is, to which Sam (played by Creator/BruceCampbell) replies, "Well, he's no Campbell."
** Michael also makes contact with a Libyan operative named Anwar in one episode. (Gabrielle Anwar plays Fiona.)
** Inverted in a "Signals and Codes" where the client of the week was played by an actor named Michael Weston.
** In one episode, Sam and Barry are discussing people who only use one name, and Sam says "Spider-Man" as an example. Bruce Campbell has a cameo in all three of the Sam Raimi Franchise/SpiderMan movies.
** In "Identity" Sam and Fiona use Detectives "Cagney and Lacey" as aliases.
** And in the winter premiere of season 3, Tyne Daly guest stars.
** WordOfGod mentions that as a general rule, they write characters with a specific actor in mind. This is in part due to the need to quickly establish characters and chemistry (see the above Tyne Daly instance) as it is just having fun.
** There was also "False Flag", where Fi said Sam's bulletproof vest smells like Old Spice and bourbon. Bruce Campbell is a spokesperson for Old Spice.
** In one episode, Sam is doing surveillance on Carla, who takes time to swim. Commenting on her ability, Sam says: "The woman is a machine." Carla's actress, Creator/TriciaHelfer, played several robots on Series/2003.
** In 5x6, Sam compliments Mike on his chin. Mike instantly turns to face Sam, seemingly very surprised, and notes that it means a lot coming from Sam. Bruce Campbell (Sam) really is known for his chin among other things -- he even titled the book he authored after his chin.
** A recent episode showed Gabrielle Anwar once again getting to tango.
** John C. [=McGinley=] plays Michael's former CIA mentor Tom Card. References to [=McGinley=]'s role as Dr. Cox on Series/Scrubs abound: among other things, Card displays exasperation and impatience with his young protege, he does a ton of ering, and he even does Dr. Cox's frustrated whistle in one scene.
** Barry the money launderer refers to Sam's shotgun as his "boomstick."

Added DiffLines:

* WrittenInInfirmity: The scar under Jeffrey Donovan's left eye has been written into the show, as something Michael's abusive father gave him "to remember him by".
