* EndOfAnEra: This was one of the last major Hollywood films to be done "the old-fashioned way", with indoor soundstages, tromphe l'oeil sets, miniatures, and various other vestiges of old-school Hollywood filmmaking; the very next year, Film/JurassicPark came along and nothing was the same after that. Later viewers have even criticized the film for its "cramped staging"...which is a little unfair, because Creator/TimBurton deliberately had the sets constructed that way as a tribute to the German expressionist melodramas of the early 1920s (where the cramped mise-en-scene was also deliberate). Not that Batman Returns wasn't also a gateway to the future: it was the very first film recorded with Dolby digitalized sound, the first to be released in more than 2,000 movie theaters across America simultaneously, and one of the first to integrate computer-animated graphics seamlessly into a (semi-)realistic story.

** The character of Max Shreck was originally written for Harvey Dent (Creator/BillyDeeWilliams), thus explaining the character's political ambitions. The film would have ended on a cliffhanger, with the explosion at the end only scarring him.

** The Simpsons episode "Sideshow Bob Roberts" has a plot that (unintentionally) closely parallels this movie's, with a seemingly reformed criminal running for mayor and a visit to a Hall of Records (albeit by a sympathetic character Lisa rather than a villain).

Added DiffLines:

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The script mentions murderer Ted Bundy (who had been executed just a few years earlier), Alfred suggests that Bruce Wayne switch the TV channel to Series/LoveConnection, and in one crowd scene the camera briefly passes over a young man wearing a jacket with a picture of Gogo Dodo from WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures, as if the filmmakers were daring us: "Betcha can't catch us trying to date this film!"

** There was talk of having Creator/JackNicholson return as the Joker, despite his fate at the end of the previous film (though it's not exactly unheard of for the Joker to come BackFromTheDead in the comics). All of this was thrown out once Creator/TimBurton agreed to return as director because he didn't want to make a direct sequel for whatever reason, though the film did still reference the previous film's events by mentioning Vicki Vale.

* RebuiltSet: The exterior Gotham City main street set was redesigned, but still retained some recognisable elements of the set as seen in the previous movie. The 1989 film had been shot over in London, but the sequel was made in Hollywood, hence the need to rebuild several of the sets completely from scratch.

** Creator/AnnetteBening of all people was Creator/TimBurton's original choice to play Selina/Catwoman, but she turned it down due to her pregnancy at the time. Creator/SeanYoung, still bitter over losing the role of Vicki Vale in 1989's Batman, lobbied hard to secure the role as Catwoman, even going as far as to confront Burton at the Warner Bros. studios, wearing a homemade Catwoman costume... with disastrous results that permanently damaged her career. Other candidates were Ellen Barkin, Jennifer Beals, Creator/LorraineBracco She chose Film/MedicineMan instead. , Music/Cher, Creator/GeenaDavis She chose Film/ALeagueOfTheirOwn instead. , Bridget Fonda, Creator/JodieFoster She chose Film/LittleManTate instead. , Creator/NicoleKidman, Creator/JenniferJasonLeigh, Music/Madonna Like Davis, she chose Film/ALeagueOfTheirOwn instead. , Creator/DemiMoore, Creator/SusanSarandon She was interested, but dropped out to star in Film/LorenzosOil, a role which, ironically, had been vacated by Creator/MichellePfeiffer , Brooke Shields Burton turned her down because she was no longer a bankable star , Creator/MerylStreep Burton thought she was too old , Creator/SigourneyWeaver She chose Film/AlienThree instead. and Raquel Welch.
