Removing a lot of the natter - after all, this page concerns Angel the TV show, not all of Whedon's work nor is it supposed to be a catalogue of what he's been accused of and who has supported him and who hasn't

** Creator/CharismaCarpenter disliked Cordelia's seduction of Connor in Season 4, finding it incredibly creepy. In 2019, she shared an article talking about Cordelia getting StuffedInTheFridge, and how she and the other female characters were treated badly. Then in 2021 she wrote a full account accusing Whedon of horrible verbal abuse throughout her run on both shows, including pressuring her to get an abortion so her pregnancy wouldn't interfere with his story plans. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar, Creator/AmberBenson, and Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg quickly voiced their support. Others such as Creator/JamesMarsters, Creator/DavidBoreanaz, Creator/AmyAcker, Creator/JAugustRichards, Creator/JulieBenz and Jonathan M. Woodward voiced sympathy for her but did not back up her allegations. Whedon alumni such as Nathan Fillon and Alan Tudyk disputed her account of events as did Joss himself as well as writer/producer David Fury.

** Cordelia was gradually phased out during Seasons 4 and 5 due to friction between Creator/CharismaCarpenter and Creator/JossWhedon (he told Magazine/TVGuide that it this was due to the writers running out of things for her to do). This became HarsherInHindsight when Carpenter accused Whedon of essentially writing her off the show to punish her for getting pregnant at a time he considered inconvenient. However this was denied by Whedon and the other producers pointing out that she had failed to inform the producers in advance of her being pregnant forcing frantic rewrites and having them resort to the Connor/Cordelia relationship to explain her condition, a plot twist which was widely hated by fans. The initial plan was for Cordelia to return at the end of the season to kill Jasmine herself but Carpenter's health was not up to it. In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum, James Marsters stated that in order to have a fifth season at all Joss Whedon had to cut costs and increase ratings to please the studio. To do this the character of Spike was brought across from Buffy with his fanbase and Marsters was asked to take a pay cut but refused as he had to support his son and niece (as his brother had fallen ill). In order to achieve this Whedon had to have more "bottle" episodes limited to the set of Wolfram and Hart and cut the number of regular/recurring stars on the show. Carpenter, Vincent Kartheiser and Stephanie Romanov were all let go from the series, apart from "You're Welcome" for Carpenter and the multiple reappearences for Kartheiser.

* HostilityOnTheSet: Following Creator/RayFisher's claims against Whedon in the wake of the imminent release of Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague in 2021, Creator/CharismaCarpenter went public with long-rumored allegations surrounding her time on the show, saying that Creator/JossWhedon played favorites with actors on set and pit them against each other to win his approval, that she was overworked to the point where it caused her physical harm, and that the only reason she stayed on as long as she did was for the steady paycheck. In particular, her pregnancy in the fourth season of Angel caused a lot of friction between her and Whedon (up to and including allegedly him demanding she get an abortion, something which he flatly denies), which ended with Cordelia being written out of the fifth season in a manner that left a lot of bad blood, not least because Carpenter only found out from the press. She was eventually brought back for "You're Welcome", [[spoiler:only for Cordelia to be KilledOffForReal after Whedon promised her he wouldn't do so]]. By her account, Carpenter was in tears when she realized how she was being written out of the show. Several other Buffy cast members supported Carpenter's claims, with Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg saying that Whedon acted inappropriately behind the scenes (having had affairs with several Buffy actresses as he admitted during his divorce) and Creator/AmberBenson accusing him of creating a toxic work environment. Creator/DavidBoreanaz, Creator/JamesMarsters, Creator/JAugustRichards, Creator/AmyAcker, Creator/JulieBenz and Jonathan M. Woodward also backed up her claims. However other Whedon cast alumni and producers have disputed such claims which have all been denied by Whedon himself, notably David Fury, Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillon. Whedon has admitted he was very strict on set but that the cast were so young if he had not the production would have descended into a "cocktail party".

** Season 4 had a sudden and drastic rewrite brought on because of Charisma Carpenter's pregnancy, which required changing much of the later two thirds of the series, Carpenter inexplicably not informing the producers of her condition. According to Carpenter this caused Whedon, supposedly out of spite and anger at having to do so, subsequently writing Cordelia as the villain for the early half of the season while writing around the pregnancy, and ultimately Cordelia was written out of the show at the end of Season 4 with only a brief appearance in Season 5 to wrap up her arc. However this has been contradicted by others including James Marsters who states that Carpenter and other recurring/regular characters were let go in order to pay his fee as Spike coming into the series and have a fifth season at all, the studio demanding lower costs and higher ratings. According to David Fury it was always intended for Cordelia to be the season 4 villain, the character of Jasmine created as Carpenter could not continue working. In 2021, with Whedon in hot water after accusations of abusive behavior while making Film/JusticeLeague2017, Carpenter piled on with claims that the situation on Angel was even worse than anyone knew at the time, including Whedon trying to pressure her to abort her baby, something totally denied by him. From there the floodgates opened with numerous other actors from both Angel and Buffy, male and female alike, saying her story fit perfectly with their own experiences with Whedon. However others contradicted their accounts, Whedon defending his actions as necessary to make his series as good as they were.

Notably Whedon has stayed very friendly with numerous members of the cast such as Alysson Hannigan, Alexis Dennisof and J August Richards, the former asking him to be their child's godfather, latter even inviting him to his wedding.

Whedon alumni such as Nathan Fillon and Alan Tudyk disputed her account of events as did Joss himself, writer/producer David Fury criticising Carpenter for "unprofessional" behaviour such as getting a crucifix tattoo when she was playing a vampire's love interest. Notably Whedon has stayed very friendly with numerous members of the cast such as Alysson Hannigan, Alexis Dennisof and J August Richards, the former asking him to be godfather to their child, the latter even inviting him to his wedding.

** Cordelia was gradually phased out during seasons four and five due to friction between Creator/CharismaCarpenter and Creator/JossWhedon (he told Magazine/TVGuide that it this was due to the writers running out of things for her to do). In order to achieve this Whedon had to have more "bottle" episodes limited to the set of Wolfram and Hart and cut the number of regular/recurring stars on the show, Carpenter, Vincent Karthesiser and Stephanie Romanov were all let go from the series, apart from You're Welcome for Carpenter and the multiple reappearences for Karthesiser.
