* ''The Queen of The Damned'', part 3 of ''Literature/TheVampireChronicles''. Said Queen, the [[AGodIAM deranged]] Akasha, wants resident AntiHero Lestat to be this to her. While he does call himself evil more than once [[spoiler: he suffers a major [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone breakdown]] over the [[EvenEvilHasStandards things she made him do]] and leaves her.]]

** Another Sanderson example -- at the end of Way of Kings, [[spoiler:Szeth unwillingly becomes this to [[BigBad Taravangian]] when he discovers that he is in possession of his Oath Stone]].

** Redtooth and later Darkclaw to Cluny the Scourge in ''Redwall''.
*** Cluny goes through a long series of Dragons, since none of them lasts very long. After Darkclaw dies Cluny favors Scragg. After Scragg dies, he sets up Cheesethief as a Dragon but then he unexpectedly he serves as a decoy and gets killed. By the final battle, Killconey loosely fills the role, and after that it ceases to matter.

* The Steel Inquisitors -- once-human, virtually unstoppable killing machines -- serve as the collective Dragons to [[EvilOverlord the Lord Ruler]] in Creator/BrandonSanderson's ''{{Mistborn}}'' trilogy. [[spoiler:After the first book, [[TheManBehindTheMan the real Big Bad]] [[OmnicidalManiac Ruin]] takes command of the Inquisitors, and one of them, Marsh, becomes his ([[BrainwashedAndCrazy unwilling]]) Dragon.]]

* ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'': If Lord Vetinari [[NobleDemon were]] an the EvilOverlord, then Samuel Vimes would be his Dragon. Vimes is often said to be Vetinari's "terrier", often unwittingly or unwillingly, but is TheProtagonist of all the Watch books.

* In Andy Hoare's WhiteScars novel ''Hunt for Voldorius'', Nullus to Voldorius.

* Pehaps not so surprising, Tom Hagen in TheGodfather.

** High House Chains: Formerly [[TheEmperor Ruhlad]] [[ImmortalityHurts Sengar]], The King in Chains, to the series' BigBad, the [[OmnicidalManiac Crippled God]], who due to his SealedEvilInACan status, cannot be King of his own house. With Ruhlad's death, the two most obvious candidates for this position are the [[TheStarscream rebellious]] Knight, [[BarbarianHero Karsa Orlong]] who wants no part in the [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Crippled God's]] schemes, and The Reaver, BadassGrandpa [[MisanthropeSupreme Kallor]] who actively seeks out the position of King in Chains.

** Also in ''Black, White and Shades of Mediochre'', despite both of their villainous organisations being UnwittingPawns in the grand scheme of things, [[TheBrute Underdog Narrow]] is pretty-much TheDragon to [[FantasticRacism Zac]] [[RightWingMilitiaFanatic Abrahams]], and [[TheChampion Tiffany]] [[CuteButPsycho Quicksilver]] is pretty-much TheDragon to [[ClassicalMovieVampire Guinevere]] [[ForTheEvulz Spencer]].

* In Creator/DavidEddings' ''Literature/TheBelgariad'', Ctuchik and Zedar play Dragon to [[PhysicalGod Torak]], while on a lesser scale [[{{Ninja}} Brill]] is the Dragon to [[StarterVillain Asharak]] (although the full details of that relationship aren't made fully clear). In the sequel, ''TheMalloreon'', Naradas is [[BigBad Zandramas]]' NumberTwo, while the [[DragonWithAnAgenda Demon Lord Mordja]] is her last line of physical defence; Mordja's rival, [[DemonLordsAndArchDevils Nahaz]] is DragonWithAnAgenda and DragonInChief to her rival, [[AGodAmI Urvon]]. Urvon's right hand man [[SmugSnake Harakan]] / [[DarkMessiah Mengha]] could be considered another Dragon and is definitely his BastardUnderstudy; like Nahaz Harakan too [[DragonWithAnAgenda has an agenda]].

* Dah'mir of ''Literature/TheDragonBelow'' {{Eberron}} trilogy is The Dragon to the Master of Silence, a daelkyr. [[spoiler: And an actual dragon...]]

** In the fifth book of ''[[WarriorCatsOmenOfTheStars Omen of the Stars]]'', Antpelt becomes The Dragon to minor villain Shredtail. [[spoiler: He doesn't last very long.]]

** In ''TheNewProphecy'' arc, Hawkfrost serves as Tigerstar's dragon. He's also a DragonInChief, seeing as Tigerstar is dead but he isn't. However, he spends the ''[[WarriorCatsPowerOfThree Power of Three]]'' arc as a regular dragon due to Brambleclaw killing him.
** In ''Starlight'', the fourth book of ''[[WarriorCatsTheNewProphecy The New Prophecy]]'', Mudclaw is Hawkfrost's dragon until he gets a literal [[DroppedABridgeOnHim bridge dropped on him]].
** In ''OmenOfTheStars'', Brokenstar replaces Hawkfrost as Tigerstar's dragon because Tigerstar likes Brokenstar more.

* Portia Hoechst, in Creator/CharlesStross' ''[[TheEschatonSeries Iron Sunrise]]''

* In the web novel Literature/{{Brennus}}, The Dark's dragon is, apropoiately enough, Wyrm, a dragon-themed supervillainess. Flashbacks reveal [[spoiler: that she was one of the first people to manafest after Point Zero. As a child she active sought out The Dark before he was even a supervillain,]] and along with Kraquok, has been one of his closest friends and trusted confidants ever since. The Dark has even stated he would be perfectly content to retire and give her control of The Syndicate once she learns not to be so emotionless.

* Creator/TerryBrooks also makes use of this trope. In ''[[Literature/TheSwordOfShannaraTrilogy The Elfstones of Shannara]]'', [[DemonLordsAndArchDevils The Dagda Mor]] has [[TheJuggernaut The Reaper]] and [[ShapeShifter The Changeling]] as his CoDragons. In ''Literature/TheHeritageOfShannara'', several [[TheHeartless Shadowen]] could be seen as [[ManipulativeBastard Rimmer Dall's]] Dragon, but the most archetypical is likely the entirely human PsychoForHire Pe Ell. In ''Literature/TheVoyageOfTheJerleShannara'', psychopathic computer system [[DiscOneFinalBoss Antrax]] has [[HollywoodCyborg Ard Patrinell]], and [[BigBad The Morgawr]] has Mwellret [[SmugSnake Cree Bega]] as his NumberTwo. In ''[[Literature/TheWordAndTheVoid Running with the Demon]]'', the titular demon uses the [[SealedEvilInACan maentwrog]] as his Dragon during his confrontation with the heroes, having it incapacitate [[KnightInSourArmour John Ross]] while he targets [[TheHero Nest]].
