** As he's explaining his business to Twilight, he asks if he can see her Cutie Mark and wistfully comments he would have liked for his special talent to be "something like that". Even if he managed to play the crappy hand he was dealt into a successful multiversal business that brought him fame, wealth and respect, Bowser still wouldn't have willingly picked that if he had been given the choice.

* The idea that Bowser is ''forced'' by Fate to kidnap princesses, when he just wanted to be someone normal. When he tries to ScrewDestiny, he finds himself having dreams about abducting princesses, scribbling plans for traps and ambushes, no matter how hard he wanted to chase them away. He first claimed to his wife he was writing a book, but she ultimately learned he was lying and when she was made aware of ''why''... she asked for divorce and she took their son. And Bowser was left alone, in spite of having done everything to be good.

Bowser's backstory being an in-universe tearjerker is its own trope called Sympathy For The Devil.

** It's a tearjerker InUniverse -- as he explains Twilight that kidnapping princesses basically is his ''cutie mark'', the poor alicorn finds herself sobbing and thinks she very much would enjoy throwing the one responsible for making him the villain when he never asked for it into lava.
