* Unlike the Garou Team ending in ''XI'', where Hotaru gets sidetracked in the party, she finally did get to meet Gato. And as usual, either him trying to cover for her in his quest or being an utter jackass, Gato rejects her and outright said she's not his sister. No slaps this time unlike [[VideoGame/GarouMarkOfTheWolves the original]], but it still felt like a slap to the face of poor Hotaru.

* The Ash team's story for ''XV'' reveals Kukri's origin, and it's not a pleasant one. He grew up alone as a vagrant in an African desert city, fighting for his life every day until a mysterious woman (implied to be Dolores) took him in as a student. She taught him about the mystic powers he would eventually develop, which later manifested as a massive sandstorm. His teacher dove headfirst into the sandstorm to rescue young Kukri, but at the cost of her own life. Ever since then, he's been searching for a way to reunite with her.

** From a meta standpoint, this was also during a time when the original SNK was on the verge of bankruptcy, with their doors closing for good by 2001. Fortunately, they'd rebound eventually with ''KOF 2003'' as SNK Playmore... and then they nearly go bankrupt ''again'' after ''XIII''' only to be reborn once more as the original SNK with ''XIV''. Talk about a rough history.

* ''KOF [='=]99''. What becomes of Kyo after the events of ''[='=]97'' is pretty depressing. After having saved the world from the wrath of Orochi alongside Iori, he ends up being rewarded for his troubles through unwilling cloning at the hands of NESTS. This is best reflected by his leitmotif, [[https://youtu.be/RVuon4OLtpE "Tears"]], which is one of the most somber themes in the series.
