* Sonic's humiliating defeat in the intro acts as both this and Main/NightmareFuel. It's one of the few times where he's outright lost, and it's played for maximum tragedy, especially considering Eggman managed to both force him out of his Super form and steal the Chaos Emeralds from him. On top of this, the process of cracking the planet open imbues him with Dark Gaia's energy, making him the Werehog. Not only has his nemesis one-upped him, he's also been dealt a major setback and has to juggle both Eggman's machinations and his nightly transformations, with it clearly affecting him in regards to his relationships with Tails and Amy.

** The visual side of it is just as harsh; Sonic holding his arm out towards Amy, as if *trying* to work up the courage to talk to her as she runs off...and then just sighing and walking away dejectedly without a word after Chip points out how Sonic looks. It's very obvious that the girl who loves him not even *recognizing* him as a Werehog is a *really* hard thing for Sonic to take, especially once Chip plants the seed of worry that maybe Amy seeing him as something *other* than the cool blue hero might hurt her perception of him.

* Chip's resealing into the Earth. Sonic sees Chip's form lying on the ground and is about to help him, when the form disappears. As he listens to Chip's final speech, Sonic picks up Chip's remaining necklace and puts it on his wrist. Sonic then watches the sun rise, and allows a smile to cross his face as he thinks fondly of his friend.
* During the credits of VideoGame/SonicUnleashed, the song "Dear My Friend". It's almost kind of a MoodWhiplash since the rest of the game seemed kind of light-hearted, (with Aside Glances, all kinds of little gags during the cutscenes, the cartoony-looking villagers, not to mention the funny promo short: WebAnimation/SonicNightOfTheWerehog) then comes the BittersweetEnding. What really brings it out is the fact that the song is supposedly in Chip's POV, and you know he and Sonic will never see each other again.

* Sonic's reaction to Amy not recognizing him as the Werehog. He doesn't say another word the remainder of the cutscene, not even to Chip. This is one of the few times we see him so sad.

* Meta-wise, Unleashed's harsh reception on release and the following few years. Behind-the-scenes material and the game's production values and sheer amount of content made it clear that Sonic Team really poured their heart into making Unleashed, likely to make up for Sonic 06. There was serious love for this game from Sonic Team, but the fans would go on to despise Unleashed; taking the game as another instance of Sonic Team not caring about Sonic and certain reviewers giving the game lower scores than Sonic 06! All just because of the Werehog concept alone, even though the Werehog wasn't any more "offensive" than past and future concepts (UnexpectedGameplayChange notwithstanding... and even that was nothing new to the series, with even well-received games like VideoGame/SonicAdventure or VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 suffering from it). The critical backlash was negative enough for SEGA to officially de-list Unleashed and consider it an OldShame. Only after a whole decade did Unleashed's reputation change for the better, but there are still plenty of fans who look down on the game.
