Adding my opinion about how the protagonist suffered so much in spite of being a normal high schooler.

* What makes this game sadly tragic is that, unlike the following games, the Neutral route is considered the least optimistic in the series as the protagonist is all alone with only his partner and his admittedly small team of demons under his control against both forces of Law and Chaos including his two friends who immediately want him dead the moment he choose Neutral and berates him for his desire to balance freedom and order in such a broken and divided world. Even more tragic knowing that the protagonist is simply a normal high school boy who was caught up in the conflict compared to the other protagonists who are special in their own way.
