*** Episode 17 (16 in the Remaster) has Flay's manipulations rear their ugly head with a confrontation between her, Sai, and Kira. Sai knows she's been latching onto Kira, all the while Flay is rebuffing him like he's an insect, and at this point, Kira issues have made him grab the JerkassBall and even armlock Sai when the latter gets heated. Sai then proceeds to vainly try to get the Strike to move out of sheer envy of Kira. Earlier in the episode, Tolle and Miriallia are discussing that they can tell Flay has been acting even weirder than before (and that's saying something) and [[TemptingFate they hope things don't get ugly]] It's became awfully clear how Flay's madness and manipulations have made her such a toxic presence to her fellow Heliopolis refugees, causing them unnecessary conflict and drama when the crew really do not need this. Not hard to see why many viewers [[TheScrappy found it extremely difficult to sympathize with her]], even when she wised up later on.

*** Speaking of Natarle and Kira, when they along with Cagalli and the Desert Dawn stake out Waltfeld's controlled town, Natarle tries to wish Kira luck, both flubbing her cover (to the exasperation of the crewman with them) and just trying to be cordial with him, only for him to respond with a cold glare from behind, and we know why he's not receptive. Remember, she just vouched for his court martial and potential execution not 9 episodes prior for letting Lacus go, and then scoffed that he was let off with only a stern warning. That would certainly kill any sense of camaraderie on Kira's part. And like with the other Creator/HoukoKuwashima voiced presence in Kira's life before his fateful duel with Athrun, he never gets to reconciles with her either.

** Minor one when Kira returns to the ship after destroying the Blitz. He responds to the cheers he gets with a wail that he killed someone. On the surface, this seems weird given that he's angsted about killing previously, so why does this one bother him the most? Because he heard Athrun scream Nicol's name. ''He knows he just killed a close comrade of Athrun's and now most likely will have Athrun truly hate him''. The worst part is, he can't articulate this to the confused hangar crew or Mu because he can't reveal that he knows the Aegis' pilot. His friends already know, but what would anyone else do if they knew? Even worse, this happens right after Cagalli has to stay behind, so he's missing his only confidante at the time about Athrun who could help him.

** Murrue's reaction to Mu's apparent death is heartbreaking. After seeing the Strike blow up from tanking the ''Dominion's'' Lohengrin, she slowly breaks down crying before mournfully screaming his name.
*** To twist the knife even further, when Murrue screams, the camera pans out to the Strike's wreckage, amongst which (at least before the HD Remaster edited it out) Mu's helmet can be seen floating.

* Early in the show there is the MutualKill of EA Admiral Lewis Hallberton and ZAFT Captain Zellman, with each man sacrificing himself for the future of his side. Ramius and Nicol's near simultaneous SayMyName moments ("Admiral Hallberton!" "Captain Zellman!") drive it home.

* While a supporting character, Siegel Clyne's death is tragic in its own right. The man dedicated his life to transforming the PLANT colonies into a self-sufficient and independent country, only to watch as radicals on both sides of the war eroded his hopes for peaceful coexistence between Naturals and Coordinators before being undermined, betrayed, and murdered by Patrick Zala, his fellow nation-builder and supposed friend. Moreover, since he and Lacus had gone into hiding separately, one must wonder if his final thoughts were of his daughter's safety.

** Speaking of Lacus, seeing her break down in Kira's arms after telling him of her father's death is heartbreaking to watch, especially since this is almost certainly the first time she's allowed herself to grieve for him after learning of his death.

** The saddest part is if Flay had caught up with Mu just a few minutes earlier she would have made it with him back to the Archangel reunited with Kira and Sai and worked out their issues and gone on to be a happy member of group for the rest of Seed and into Destiny and possibly changed Kira's mentality for the better in both. Instead her fate was sealed the instant she was taken by Rau.

Added DiffLines:

** The saddest part in both this ED which would also carry into several for the sequel is it's depiction of everyone being together and happy including the characters that have died and even the ones that were never friendly to the protagonists in the first place.
