Not only did she [[spoiler: experiment on, and dispose of, a sister Satsuki never even knew about, but she killed Satsuki's father when he betrayed her.]] And learning about this is what made Satsuki the person she is today.

* While it's mostly built through flashbacks, Ryuko's situation as a whole. Her mother died not long after she was born and she had a rather bumpy relationship with her father. Before she was even 10 years old she was shipped off to boarding school and didn't see her father again until the moment he died, not even having a chance to make up with him. No friends, her family all dead... Ryuko is a pretty sad and tragic heroine.

** The backstories of Elite Four, or specifically Nonon, as well as some stuff from Newtype magazine paint a rather disturbing picture regarding Satsuki. [[spoiler:Something happened when she was five years old, something that changed the kind-hearted, smiling and friendly girl into the grim faced EvilOverlord she is now.]]
*** And that something is revealed in Episode 18 [[spoiler: She had found out just how horrible of a person her mother was. Ragyo experimented on, and disposed of a sister Satsuki never even knew about(Who turns out to be Ryuuko btw), and killed her father when he betrayed her.]] No wonder she's so damn cynical and determined.

* As of Episode 16, there's a new angle to look at Ryuko and her father's frosty relationship: [[spoiler:After defecting from Ragyo and founding Nudist Beach, Isshin knew his life would be in constant danger and didn't want Ryuko to be caught in the crossfire, at least not until Kamui Senketsu was completed, which is why he sent her off to boarding school. And sure enough, had Ryuko stayed at home instead, she would've definitely been killed by Nui. [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies Isshin deliberately "abandoned" his daughter so she could be safe.]]]]
** Hell with the reveal who Ryuko MOTHER is, it no wonder why Isshin kept her away.

The build-up and the impact of how ''suddenly'' it happens is absolutely gut-wrenching--just when Ryuko is shrugging off her HeroicBSOD and ready to get back into the game by saving Shinjiro from the Disciplinary Committee... only to be baited into a trap [[MasterOfDisguise when Shinjiro reveals himself to be Nui]], which leads to a CurbStompBattle that goes FromBadToWorse when Ryuko holds herself back from dipping into another HeroicRROD, leading to Nui getting bored with her. And as effortlessly as Nui had dealt with Sanageyama, she rips Ryuko's Scissor Blade from her hand and ''[[DeathOfAThousandCuts shreds]]'' [[TokenNonHuman Senketsu]] [[HeroKiller to pieces]]... and had [[BigDamnVillains Satsuki not shown up to drive Nui off]], she would've killed Ryuko too. Although [[UnexplainedRecovery he does get better]], it's no surprise that people have already begun it comparing to Kamina's death in ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann''.]]

* Satsuki's cold, harsh attitude and detachment from reality gains an ENTIRELY new dimension now that it's canon that her mom is [[spoiler: molesting her, and it's implied this has been going on for a LONG time.]]

Hell, it's heavily implied that, before Mako and Senketsu came into her life, Ryuko was '''deliberately alienated''' by her other classmates for some reason after her father had left her in the school's hands and pushed her to the point where she decided to delve into the bad and ended up becoming a full-time delinquent before the series, [[IJustWantToHaveFriends presumably just to get]] ''[[IJustWantToHaveFriends something]]'' [[IJustWantToHaveFriends out of her peers besides abuse]]. [[GoneHorriblyRight And it probably went as well as you'd expect]], it's no wonder why Ryuko is always so angry and aggressive as she is with just... * Ryuko and Mako's fight, especially when [[spoiler:Mako realizes Ryuko isn't hitting back. She gives her entire family a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech for cheering her on. It's clear she had such high hopes for the family...]]
