The way he holds onto her as though he'll never let go makes it worse. They're terrified and clinging to each other as though they have nothing else to hold on to, and Creator/NathanielParker and SharonSmall make viewers feel every bit of it.

** Lynley's grief over [[spoiler: Trenarrow's death]]. What's awful is that he knows that for all these years, he prevented [[spoiler: his mother from finding happiness in marriage]], and now that he was finally reconciled to the idea, it's too late.

** Havers' utter disillusionment at the end.

** When Lynley is told that [[spoiler:Helen has miscarried]]. In a particularly poignant scene that follows, he blames himself for what has happened because at first, he had been in two minds about [[spoiler:his impending fatherhood]]. Havers does her best to lessen his sense of guilt.
