**** It's strange to see how often the anvil "All this civil defense stuff won't work" stands in for, and to a certain extent, undermines, the "Nuclear arms race must end before we all die" anvil. The artists seem to have had the ludicrous impression that the average Brit or Yank expected to survive swimmingly and needed to be disabused of that idea before they would care about nuclear war.

***He probably should have thanked him for something else: Larry Schweikart noted in his book ''America's Victories'' that Reagan's approval rating rose sharply after the movie aired. The public wanted someone tough enough to head it off.

* John Varley's 1984 short story "The Manhattan Phone Book (Abridged)" is based on the premise that America's phone books are lists of people who will all be dead if a nuclear war occurs. The anvil is that such a war is not survivable, much less winnable, and that science fiction "after the bomb" stories are just stories. He drops it in gut-wrenching fashion by detailing a number of horrible ways that people who survive the first detonations will suffer and die in the hours and days after the attack.[[/folder]]

**** In that case, he can only have attacked Socialism, because that's what Marx/Engels described as the last stage before Communism. Socialism is the dictatorship of the proletariat, which does away with Capitalism (among other things). Marx' Communism is, finally, the equal rule by the entire body of mankind; where any form of totalitarism is not necessary anymore. That's also why it was the USSR - the Union of Soviet '''Socialist''' Republics. Orwell bloody well knew that they hadn't reached (and would never reach) even a single percent of Communism. And '''that's''' why he had to drop that anvil.

*****News Flash: Marxism-Leninism is not the only "socialism." Orwell, having fought in the Spanish Civil War with the POUM and FAI in Spain saw their libertarian, democratic varieties of it. That's what he supported, in contrast to the grey hell of 1984 and, say, modern North Korea.

** One of the most powerfl anvils dropped, yet oddly one of the most often missed, was how truly evil despair and defeatism are. All of the heroes keep pushing on despite apparent hopelessness, and eventually win through. By contrast, the secondary villians -- Saruman and Denethor -- are both corrupted by their own despair into joining the wrong side simply because it looks likeit will win, or giving up and committing suicide while leaving your family and friends to die.

** How ironic that the so-called fundamentalists are the most hypocritical of his followers.
*** First, that's your opinion, and you know what they say about opinions being like the terminus of the colon. Second, have you ever noticed how the only people calling conservative Christians "fundamentalists" are people who are strongly critical of them? Third, are you sure you're judging all the "fundamentalists" or are you judging millions of people by some jerk you know or by media potrayals? Fourth, when the United Church of Christ proved how tolerant and loving they were by running ads implying that conservative churches don't want black people or handicapped folks to attend, did you find that hypocritical? Fifth, sure, there's lots of hypocrites in the church, but come on by and we'll make room for one more.
*** I don't know, some of the more inclusive, modern followers trample all over some of Jesus' teachings. Luke 15:26 comes to mind.
**** Excuse me? At least in my Bible that's a nondescript passage in the middle of the Prodigal Son story.

*** Ironically, his point is Americentric in the way that both liberals and conservatives sometimes allow themselves to think that an American problem is the worst example of said problem that exists or ever has existed. Despite what someone may think about the gay marriage debate, America is one of the most pro-gay countries in the world. One wonders, for instance, if Wainwright knows there are only 10 countries where gay marriage is legal (not counting the US) and in 2004 amendments to prevent gay marriage passed by wide margins in states that the eeeeeevil Dubya lost by wide margins, such as Oregon and Michigan.

* Hank Beebe's musical review "Tuscaloosa's Calling Me...But I'm not Going" opens with "Only Right Here in New York City," a sarcasm-fest about how everyone outside NYC sees the city as a unique hellhole with crime and corrpution problems no other city has. A trip to Washington | Is an upper no one could ever up | They're all so wise there | And no one lies there | And no one's ever heard the word corrupt!"

** Actually more of an Anvilicious than an Anvil that Needs To Be Dropped, because the problems don't stem from the lack of gay marriage but from outdated hospital policies (which effect unmaried heteros the same way), lack of a medical power of attorney (which even married couples should consider), etc. Plus, people die in American hospitals because "we won't take your girlfriend's insurance" about as often as Ron White perfoms at convents. Hospitals are not in the business of letting people die because of a hitch in payment, for altruistic and legaal reasons.

**** The one abortion-related shooting that has happened since Obama took office had nothing to do with the health care bill (it was garden variety crazy), it happened before the bill was even released to the Congresscritters and it didn't happen at a clinic--a minor point, the doctor is still dead....but it goes to the troper's credibility. It seems that books about civil war may turn out to be accurate prophecies if the best thing people portraying themselves as smarter and cooler heads ("Hurp Durp") can do is make wild claims that have nothing to do with reality.
