** The Gems are alien [[UltimateLifeform Ultimate Lifeforms]] who are immortal, born with all the knowledge they need, have a variety of superpowers including shapeshifting and holographic projections, and don't need to perform any bodily functions from eating to sleeping to even breathing. Rose Quartz had an unusual mindset for a Gem; while most of Gemkind saw organic life as little more than insects, she was fascinated by its capacity to change, grow, and adapt. In "[[Recap/StevenUniverseS3E16GregTheBabysitter Greg the Babysitter]]," she lamented the fact that Gems were tailor-made from birth for their roles in Homeworld's FantasticCasteSystem and were expected always to remain the same.
--->''' Rose Quartz:''' When a Gem is made, it's for a reason. They burst out of the ground already knowing what they're supposed to be, and then...that's what they are, forever. But you [humans], you're ''supposed'' to change. You're never the same, even from moment to moment! You're allowed and expected to invent who you are.
** [[Characters/StevenUniverseWhiteDiamond White Diamond]] is the show's GreaterScopeVillain, and when we finally meet her in the "Change Your Mind" arc, we discover that this trope is why. White views herself as utterly flawless, which in turn has made her develop a terrifying InsaneTrollLogic: any idea she has must also be perfect solely because she came up with it. It was this philosophy that created the FantasticCasteSystem of Homeworld, which led to millennia of conquest (so even more planets can either experience White's perfection or have their resources drained to create more Gems), CreativeSterility among the entire Gem race, and an overall culture that fears and despises change. White Diamond also has a way of bringing any Gem that rebels against her to heel--namely, by [[MindRape seizing control of their minds]] and making them colorless, [[GettingSmiliesPaintedOnYourSoul perpetually-smiling]] [[HiveMind extensions of herself]] that speak in her voice. [[spoiler: Steven and Connie eventually defeat White by forcing her to realize that she ''isn't'' perfect, which in turn breaks her worldview and leads to massive reform across Homeworld.]]

* OneOfTheGirls: {{Justified}}, Steven's {{Parental Substitute}}s are gems coded as women, his best friend and later partner is a girl, and many of the people/gems that have made an impact on Steven have been female/female-coded. The series is already pretty heavily dominated by female characters (the number of main male characters including Steven can be counted on ''one hand''), though technically the gems have NoBiologicalSex. Steven doesn't have a complex on being/acting masculine since he was kept away from much of regular human life; he's fond of the color pink, cries openly, and his greatest strength is his empathy.

* ProdigalFamily: Greg's cousin Andy [=DeMayo=] comes to boot Lapis and Peridot out under the impression that some hippies have taken residence in his barn. While Steven is thrilled at the idea of more family, Greg is mortified and visibly uncomfortable. After all, he ran away from his family because they never supported his dreams and were (still are) [[AngryWhiteMan traditionalist]] stuck-ups --something that Andy's attitude toward the Gems confirms.

* ObfuscatedInterface: The Homeworld Gems use something akin to a keyboard-shaped vat of liquid, which the Gems stick their hands into, causing a bunch of codes to appear in their eyes while they control a spaceship.
