* [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] by the demons in ''Manga/SleepyPrincessInTheDemonCastle'': They deliberately try to set things up so that the hero will gradually get stronger and be at maximum power so it'll be that much more impressive when the [[FinalBoss Demon King]] defeats him. They even go to the point of deliberately leaving treasure for him and calibrating the difficulty of their battles to ensure he maintains the proper progression.

** This is played blatantly straight during the East Blue Saga, where each major pirate ArcVillain has a higher bounty than the previous ArcVillain. Buggy's is 15 million, Kuro's (deactivated) bounty is 16 million, Krieg's is 17 million, and Arlong's is 20 million. The (relatively) higher gap between Krieg's and Arlong's is to emphasize how much more dangerous Arlong is compared to the other pirates in East Blue, and he indeed proves to be a much more difficult opponent for Luffy than the others. Note that this is ''before'' the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line.

Note that this is ''before'' the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line. This is especially prevalent in the [[Series/OnePiece2023 Netflix adaptation]], where each villain is introduced with their WantedPoster and bounty flying into the scene briefly (which also helps sell Arlong as the ArcVillain of the season thanks to his AdaptationalEarlyAppearance).

Seems to actually be part of the dungeon ecosystem, with powerful mid-level bosses preventing deep-level boss monsters from forcing lesser species further up and overrunning the easier levels.levels. The level of ambience mana also increases as one delves deeper into a dungeon, allowing for larger and more powerful monsters that would otherwise not survive near the surface. A dungeon growing out of control causes the ambient mana level to rise and leak into the surrounding area, allowing powerful monsters to escape outside.
** This also occurs over the course of the story to the protagonists. Their first primary boss was the Red Dragon, the biggest and most powerful monster in the dungeon. They defeat it, drawing the attention of the Lunatic Magician, an astonishingly powerful elven wizard who controls the dungeon and all the monsters in it. [[spoiler:When they defeat him, they are now up against the Winged Lion, a reality-warping EldritchAbomination, from which the Lunatic Magician drew his magical power, whose entire body ''is'' the dungeon and his victory would spell TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.]]
