** The design and game mechanic of the keys is reminiscent of the keys from Super Mario World.

* The graphic for the "Energy Tank" food item you can buy in the last level looks almost exactly like energy tanks from earlier VideoGame/MegaMan games. The in-game description even states "It has a letter E on it".

** Why does Mobile teach you a special attack in his secret basement? Because there was a RedHerring in the third volume about him teaching Scott how to use psychic powers against Todd.
