* TheGhost: [[JustForPun Aside from the literal ghosts in the series]], there's Owen's mother, who despite being mentioned frequently and providing a few plot points never actually appears. It becomes particularly noticeable in the finale, when there's no photograph of her where you might expect one to appear [[spoiler:in Owen's restaurant alongside Hannah's]], presumably because no-one was ever cast in the role.

* LighterAndSofter: Arguably compared to ''Series/TheHauntingOfHillHouse''. The characters are all generally better adjusted than the Crain family, there is certainly much less bickering and death, the overall tone is less frightening, and [[spoiler:the source of the Manor's haunting is much less malevolent, more an unwitting force of nature. And while it cannot be fully defeated, it is at least stopped for long enough to release all of the souls bound by it before coming back for a total of two souls bound, compared to ''Hill House'' where ''everyone'' who died remains forever bound within the house.]]

** Peter and Rebecca tell [[spoiler:Flora and Miles]] to think of their "Forever House." This was the same term meaningfully used by Olivia Crain in [[Series/TheHauntingOfHillHouse the previous series]].
** Hannah passes a message [[spoiler:to Owen through Henry’s spirit as he hovers between life and death. She ends with “the rest is all...” and is cut off by Henry’s revival before she can say the last word, [[Series/TheHauntingOfHillHouse "confetti"]].]]

* ArtisticLicenseMedicine: A small one: [[spoiler: The plague doctor called in to examine Viola is shown checking the lymph nodes in her neck. This is an accurate and period-appropriate diagnostic technique, as bubonic plague typically presents with swollen and painful lymph nodes, often in the neck. But Viola's main symptoms--coughing, shortness of breath, hemoptysis--are much more characteristic of ''pneumonic'' plague, a secondary form of the plague which involves rapidly worsening pneumonia and does not usually involve the lymph nodes. The doctor should have known the difference. He was correct, however, to quickly conclude that Viola didn't have pneumonic plague: she would have been long dead by that point if she did, given how long she avoided revealing her condition and how quickly pneumonic plague kills.]]

* AdaptationalRomanceDowngrade: It's strongly implied in ''The Turn of the Screw'' that the governess has romantic feelings for her employer, though there's no evidence of him reciprocating or even being aware of her feelings. In this series, Dani has no romantic feelings for her employer Henry Wingrave; a significant part of her character arc is [[spoiler:that she's a lesbian who falls in love with the gardener, Jamie]].

* FoundFamilyViaWork: The staff of Bly Manor counts three romances amongst them: Dani and Jamie, Owen and Hannah, and Peter and Rebecca. However, notably aside from Peter, the Wingraves and the Bly staff are all extremely close to each other. Most clear when Charlotte tells Hannah to come and stay at Bly permanently after the breakdown of Hannah's long-term relationship, which she then does for years.

** The end of the first episode has Dani being trapped in a closet, which causes her to have a panic attack because there was a mirror in there that made her Shiny Glasses-Ghost appear. [[spoiler:This being an overly literal description of her backstory.]]

* ShoutOut: Several in earlier episodes to ''Film/TheInnocents'', the 1961 adaptation of ''The Turn of the Screw''. In particular, when Dani is playing hide-and-seek with the children and it's her turn to hide, she goes behind a curtain and is frightened by [[spoiler:Peter Quint's ghost gliding up to the window directly behind her.]] The framing is practically identical to the corresponding scene in the aforementioned film; the only difference lies in [[spoiler:the audience seeing Peter before Dani does (in the film the governess always sees the ghosts before the audience does, contributing the ambiguity this series lacks.)]]

* DramaticIrony: During the flashback episode "The Two Faces Part 1," Peter tells Rebecca his purpose on this earth is to leave behind more than he took. The audience at this point already has been informed that Peter went on to rob from the ten-year-old orphan Miles' inheritance before vanishing, and that Rebecca committed suicide in the aftermath. [[spoiler:It becomes more and more ironic as the show goes on and Peter is very clearly shown to be the most selfish member of the cast, murdering Rebecca just so he wouldn't be alone and Hannah seemingly just out of spite, and trying to steal the lives of Flora and Miles so he can escape Bly and still live out the life he wants for himself and Rebecca.]] Peter took a lot, and left behind little else but pain.
