* YourCheatingHeart:
** Several times, it's been shown that both James and Barbara are cheating on each other. In "Flowers of Sin", the two claim they are in love with each other, but bouquets grow on their heads as a result of them lying to each other. In "Another Tutor", they are both cheating on each other with Mikey's tutors, Tracy and Pierre. Funny enough is there are two episodes where they assume one is cheating on the other, with the same set-up, only to reveal that it was not true.
*** In "Dad's Affair", James is cheating on Barbara with his secretary; in "The Lady Tutor", he hits on Tracy; in "Dad's Youth", it's shown he's still in love with Christina and nearly chooses her over his current family. In "Getting Rid of an Unwanted Son", [[spoiler:Mac accidentally reveals he is James' illegitimate son]].
*** In "Mikey Sees All", Barbara is cheating on James with the deliveryman. She also cheats on him with a man named Sugiura. In "Brown's Forbidden Love", Barbara also pursues a romantic affair with Brown.
** In Clare's introductory episode, Mikey becomes so smitten with her that he blows off his date with Emily just to spend time with her.

** Emily is established as a NiceGirl, but in some episodes she can be a ManipulativeBitch towards Mikey. Sometimes it's caused by Laura manipulating her, but there are some cases where she has done it on her own will, such as teaming up with Brown to trick Mikey into taking her out to better date spots.

*** In "Dad's Affair", James is cheating on Barbara with a Japanese woman; in "The Lady Tutor", he hits on Tracy; in "Dad's Youth", it's shown he's still in love with Christina and nearly chooses her over his current family. * TrademarkFavoriteFood: Teacher Bob loves Chinese noodles and even breaks off a blind date because his partner did not like Chinese noodles.

* KissingCousins: Laura is Mikey's cousin from his father's side, and by the end of the first season, she realizes she has a crush on him. However, this crush is one-sided, since Mikey vastly prefers Emily over her.

** The Kitagawas aren't any better than the Fuccons, especially since they are more nihilistic than the latter due to their PerpetualPoverty. In one episode, Mamoru lets his 8-year-old son Satoru take a swig of alcohol.

** The episodes starring the Kitagawas usually involve only just them. Even when the Fuccons appear, they never directly interact with them.

* {{Foil}}: The Kitagawas are the opposite of the Fuccons, in that they are more cynical, brash, and talk in BrutalHonesty to each other. Unlike the Fuccons, they are also poor.

* KansaiRegionalAccent: The Kitagawas speak in a Kansai dialect since they are from Kyoto. Everyone else speaks in a standard Tokyo dialect.

* MayDecemberRomance: In ''Extra'', Mikey hitches a ride from a grown adult named Saori, who gets side-tracked over her lingering feelings for her ex-boyfriend Mitsuo that she ''never'' stops her van. Eventually, it gets to the point where she starts mistaking Mikey for him and years later, they are married with a child.

*** In "Mikey Sees All", Barbara is cheating on James with the deliveryman.

* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Laura is 12 years old, but the Fuccons find her annoying because she complains a lot. When her mother, Mary, comes to take her back to the United States, Laura also throws a huge tantrum.

* ThePsychoRangers: ''Extra'' introduces Nick and his parents, who compete against the Fuccons at ''everything''. Even their dialogue shows it by repeating after the Fuccons ''but'' with adding comparisons about how much better they are.

** Emily is also guilty of being manipulative herself, as she often goes along with Laura's plans to bully him and has also guilt-tripped him on her own several times. In ''Extra'', there are two instances where she tells Mikey she prefers his dad as a prank and when she and Brown manipulate Mikey into taking her out to better locations for their dates.

* BrattyTeenageDaughter: While Laura's age is not known, the Fuccons find her annoying because she complains a lot. When her mother, Mary, comes to take her back to the United States, Laura also throws a huge tantrum.

* OneSceneWonder: The Blueberry King has only appeared in one episode, but his presence in the series is so out-of-place that he's memorable. He even has a [[http://www.fuccon-family.com/chara/index.html character description]] on the official website while his daughter Isabella does not despite that she appears in more episodes than him.

* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Charles tends to rephrase everything Tony says, and at every point in their conversation, he ends up contradicting him or saying something way out-of-line. This causes Tony to call him out on it, and they end up arguing.

* CreepyTwins: Tony and Charles are twin brothers, and they seem sinister at times since their earlier appearances mostly had them {{Troll}}ing Mikey. Charles also tends to rephrase what Tony says. Being played by mannequins also ups the creepy factor. However, all creepiness turns into NightmareRetardant when they start arguing with each other, which by then becomes hilarious.

* StuffedIntoAFridge: In "Mikey Gets Kidnapped", James and Barbara [[CassandraTruth refuse to take Mikey's kidnapping seriously]], and this ends up with Mikey's dismembered body being mailed back to his family's house.

*** In "Dad's Affair", James is cheating on Barbara with a Japanese woman; in "The Lady Tutor", he hits on Tracy; in "Dad's Youth", it's shown he's still in love with Christina and nearly chooses her over his current family.
