* CloudCookoolander: Peter Gregory. He's utterly brilliant, but a lot of what he does doesn't make an ounce of sense at first . Most notably in the third episode. While some of his investees ask him for more money, for no apparent reason has an assistant buy every menu item at "The Burger King" He then stares at the items and starts going on about sesame seeds and cicadas. This later makes sense when he uses his knowledge of cicada mating habits to predict the sesame seed crop and invests accordingly netting several billion dollars

* TheStoner: Erlich can be seen smoking a bong and in the third episode raids Guilfoyle's stash of magic mushrooms. Erlich's marijuana usage is depicted as making his already pretentious personality even more annoying. His attempt at going on a drug fueled spirit quest is also shown to be driven by his own ego and desire to leech off of Richard's potential success rather than a sincere attempt at seeking spiritual awakening.

* TakeThat: the show gently mocks certain segments of the Silicon Valley culture and the nature of tech start ups, namely how huge amounts of money is poured into products with vague real world applicability and how many programmers are loudmouthed blowhards churning out apps to try and make a quick buck.

The show follows Richard Hendrix, a meek computer programmer who inadvertently creates a loss-less file compression algorithm. His invention quickly sparks a bidding war between his employer, Gavin Belson, and billionaire tech investor Peter Gregory. Gavin offers him $10 million to sell, but Peter Gregory convinces him to accept an investment and create a start-up around his new product. Hendrix soon finds himself in over his head as he struggles to build a potentially billion-dollar business.

Richard Hendrix works at the Google-like company Hooli where his fellow coworkers practically worship at the feet of the founder, Gavin Belson. Hendrix also lives in an "incubator," a house owned by Erlich, a former programmer who sold his company and now gives room and board to programmers in exchange for ten percent of their profits.

When it's discovered that Richard's website, Pied Piper, actually employs a sophisticated compression algorithm that gives almost no loss whatsoever, he finds himself in a bidding war between Belson (who offers him $10 million for the whole thing) and Silicon Valley guru Peter Gregory (who offers him $200,000 for 5 percent of the company). The choice between taking the money or still owning his company causes Richard to have a panic attack.

* BaitAndSwitch: The beginning of the first episode opens on Creator/KidRock at what appears to be a concert. It pulls out to show that he is actually playing at a party for a bunch of bored looking programmers, thus setting the tone of the entire show.

* MacGuffin: The entire plot is propelled by Richard's algorithm for loss-less compression. He doesn't even know the full applicability of it -- Pied Piper was merely a site to see if musicians were unconsciously plagiarizing other songs.
* RunningGag: Both Belson and the previous programmers who sold their app for $100 million say that they want to use it to make the world a better place. How exactly "constructing elegant hierarchies for massive code reuse and extendability" will make the world a better place is never mentioned.
