* IncompatibleOrientation: Max's old college roommate tells her that she's a lesbian and about to marry a woman. She then reveals that her crush on Max was when she realized she was a lesbian.

* IncompatibleOrientation:
** In the episode "Woman To Woman", the real reason Shayla didn't tell Max she was a lesbian sooner: Shayla was in love with her. Max is quite taken back by the revelation.
** In the same episode "Woman To Woman", Overton tries hitting on the engaged lesbian couple Chris and Shayla, and then he tries again hitting on the lesbian guests for the couple's bridal shower. It goes about as well as one would expect.

* OverprotectiveDad According to Khadijah's younger sister, Stephanie, their father was very much like this. [[spoiler: Although Khadijah didn't get to experience this personally due to him leaving when she was young.]]

** In "A Kiss Before Lying," Kim Fields gives an impeccable and fleeting AsideGlance while her character Regine claims to have never heard of Eastland School, which is the very school her character Tootie attended in Series/TheFactsOfLife.

* AndStarring: And Kim Fields as "Regine"

''Living Single'' is a sitcom that ran from 1993 to 1998, beginning a year before ''Series/{{Friends}}''. It featured an ensemble cast of New York twentysomethings living in the middle-class Park Slope section of Brooklyn. The one obvious distinction is that the cast was African-American. The show gained points for showing Blacks succeeding in corporate America, from law to stocks to entrepreneurship.

* SexyWalk: Played straight by Max when the girls are trying to teach Sinclaire how to do this, but sadly averted when Synclaire's [[SillyWalk "Sexy Walk"]] looks more to say "I have bunions and look at my butt" according to Khadijah.

* Kyle Barker (Creator/TerrenceCCarson): Overton's best friend and roommate, a handsome but vain stockbroker/jazz musician. His sparring with Maxine does nothing to hide their mutual sexual attraction.

* PlayingGertrude: A season one episode has Terrence Howard playing a college student to Maxine's late 20s character. In real life, Howard is eight months older than Erika Alexander.

* ChivalrousPervert: Russel will do anything to put a smile on Regine's face . . . because then she's more likely to [[{{Gainaxing}} shimmy]] for him.

* {{Gainaxing}}: [[ChivalrousPervert Russel]] loves to ask Regine to "shimmy" for him. Khadijah also gives the watchers a pretty heavy bounce when complaining about what her half-sister Stephanie wrote on her wall when they were kids, "[[GagBoobs Khadijah's got big jugs]]".

** That particular episode was in fact the subject of an audience voting event.

* IWantGrandkids: UpToEleven with Regine's mother. Nearly every interaction she has on screen somehow manages to mention her desire for Regine to 'settle down & get some beans in that oven!'

* DeadpanSnarker: Kyle and Max, especially toward each other.

* CovertPervert: During an episode when [[MakesSenseInContext they are settling down to watch a porn video featuring Overton's cousin]] Synclaire is truly enthusiastic about it.

** This is likely more of a reaction to a prior experience in where she advised a high powered client to get a prenup and it caused her to be suspended for the time span of a few episodes.
