The magic system, unique within franchise, means that all characters can learn a certain amount of magic, with a character-specific spell list. Most characters' [[BlackMage Reason]] spell lists consist of only one element — Byleth and Edelgard have Fire spells, Dimitri has Lightning, Claude has Wind spells, and so on.

He also has no qualms about friendly fire or collateral damage.After attacking the Black City in the Fade and encountering its "resident", Mairon now uses a more malicious and literal Black Magic that takes the form of a demonic dragon-pony.

At first glance, Etti seems to be a Sinner who is focused on raw damage output as her Ultimate, Game Master, is all about creating a Constellation in the target area and forming Celestial Bodies to continuously attack random enemies within range. Even her first passive called Accelerate Operation buffs her attack even more as whenever Etti's initial attribute is triggered, not only does her attack speed increase, but she can also cast extra Celestial Body (up to 4) next time using Game Master. The effect, however, will be removed after she casts Game Master once. It is only her second passive called Game Rules that provides buffs rather than raw damage as each enemy has a 5% probability of generating a Gem after they die throughout the battle. A Sinner can gain a buff for 12 seconds after stopping for a moment to pick up the three differently colored Gems.Red Gem increases attack speed. Green Gem reduces damage. Blue Gem increases magic damage.
# Characters.TheSecretWorldSolomonIslandNPCs: BadassTeacher: As the headmaster of Innsmouth Academy, badass credentials are required just to withstand the trauma, and Montag has them in spades. Not only is he still holding down the fort without a twinge of fear, but he also has first-hand experience of decapitating familiars with a shovel, and has a Filth-infected version of him [[BlackMage that does battle with you]] in "The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn."
# WesternAnimation.DonaldDuck: AdaptationalBadass: The Kingdom Hearts series of games paints Donald as a BlackMage and prominent ally to Sora. Exaggerated in Kingdom Hearts III where he casts Zetta Flare, the most powerful spell in the Final Fantasy series, albeit fainting right afterward.

# YMMV.ChronoCross: BaseBreakingCharacter: Guile is loved by many for some reasons: he looks badass with Power Floats, a powerful BlackMage, a versatile Fanfic Fuel, etc. However, Guile isn't safe from extremely scathing remarks for being a Flat Character, having a troublesome inverted element grid in the game plus low accuracy and slow stamina recovery, as well as his over-the-top flamboyant look. There's also the fact that he's still implied to be Magus, but the details are vague enough that he just comes across as a Magus wannabe.
# FinalFantasy.TropesEToH: ExploitedImmunity: Most games usually have spells which target everyone and require this trope to use properly;In Final Fantasy VI, there are many different enemies that will attack the entire battlefield, including themselves, with powerful attacks. However, as they are either immune to the elements of those attacks or actually gain health from them, the disadvantages of these attacks are lost. This can also be done with playable characters, by equipping them with elemental immune items. In Final Fantasy IX: [[BlackMage Vivi]]'s most powerful spell is Doomsday, which inflicts shadow damage on all allies and enemies on the field. Equipping your characters with gear that absorbs shadow will cause them to be healed by the spell instead. The Superboss Ozma also tries this, but it's possible to invert it: it has Doomsday in its arsenal and normally absorbs shadow damage, but one sidequest rewards you by making it weak to shadow instead, so if it does use the spell, it'll harm itself.

A member of the Limian royal family secretly fights within Hibiki's party out of love for her. Hibiki fights as part of the vanguard in her party but is versatile enough to drop into any role that is required in battle.
# StatingTheSimpleSolution.VideoGames: In Octopath Traveler II, Hikari gets locked in a jail cell at one point, and one of his captors proceeds to let him out so he can go talk to the person he was looking for. A travel banter available immediately afterwards has [[BlackMage Osvald]] disappointed by this, because he'd been planning an overly-complex escape method using the salt in any food they might've gotten to wear out the cell's bars. After stating that would take too long, Hikari points out that [[BlackMage Osvald]] could've just used magic to destroy the bars instead.
# FinalFantasyX.TropesAToC: Lulu is your BlackMage, specializing in offensive magic and ways to make it more effective. Oddly, she also has very strong defensive stats.
# VideoGame.TrialsOfMana: CombatAndSupport: In terms of starting classes, there's a focus on Combat: Duran, Kevin, Hawkeye and Riesz specialize on melee combat and have no MP-consuming Moves, while Angela and Charlotte take on BlackMage and White Mage duties respectively and have underwhelming physical damage output and Class Strikes. That said, once the class changes start hitting, everything goes out the window, with all four Combat characters able to take much more Balanced positions and supplement their fighting prowess with buffs, debuffs, and even (in the case of Kevin and Duran) healing magic. The one thing that never changes is that Angela and Charlotte don't get melee-oriented classes.

This fits, considering the former four tend to have more aggressive or antagonistic personalities, while the latter four are more levelheaded and prone to supporting those around them.

# TheFaceless.VideoGames: Several BlackMage classes throughout the series have had a wide-brimmed hat to mask their face in shadow, save for their glowing eyes. It started with the original Final Fantasy BlackMage, and lasted out to Vivi in Final Fantasy IX.The original Final Fantasy had the BlackMage show his face when he upgraded to the Black Wizard. More recent remakes have redesigned the Black Wizard to retain the iconic look. Lampshaded in Brentalfloss' Ballad of the Mages "I'm the BlackMage, but I bet you knew that Yellow eyes, my disguise, do you like my pointy hat?"

# VideoGame.{{Destiny}}: The Voidwalker Warlock subclass, with a heavily offense-based skill tree and numerous area-effect abilities.
# CreatorsPet.{{Anime}}: Slayers has Pokota, a Bratty Half-Pint trapped in a Ridiculously Cute Critter form and who has an angsty backstory. His personality was said to be based on a character who appeared later on in the Light Novels. This might not have been so bad (though he IS still annoying), but Pokota just so happens to be a BlackMage on par with Lina Inverse and a Magic Knight wielding a replica of the Sword of Light. These two things, plus his bratty behavior and the fact that the plot of Slayers Revolution all but revolves around him definitely makes him a contender for being a Creator's Pet. The worst thing is that while many "guest stars" in the Slayers anime do share similar traits (Filia could be annoying and Xellos has Story-Breaker Power), Pokota largely isn't *funny* in a comedy show and yet gets a lot of screen time, a strong sign of a Creator's Pet.
# ShoutOut.MagicalCircleGuruGuru: Final Fantasy Kukuri's cat hood that she wears while in Alahabica resembles those of a White Mage's, specifically, the Devout's from Final Fantasy III. Kukuri's old staff resembles that of a [[BlackMage BlackMage's.]] Nike and Kukuri occasionally rides a big bird that looks like Chocobos. but with bushy, purple hair on top of their heads.

Nightblades tend to be your stealth specialists, with a lot of moves devoted to stealth, being undetected, or debilitating opponents [[BlackMage Sorcerers]] have lots of ranged, magicka-based abliities, as well as being able to summon lesser Daedra to assist in combat. Wardens from the Morrowind update are a tanky support class that use animals for limited offense and enhancements, healing plants, and protective sheets and spikes of ice. Necromancers from the Elsweyr update use positioning around dead mobs and allies to strengthen abilities.

Invoked by Chaiere as his reason for taking in Acacia as a member; her [[BlackMage extreme magical power]] was simply that promising, but aside from that, her only other real skills are painting and gardening.

# SequentialBoss.RolePlayingGame: Seymour Guado's first fight against the party is one of these. First he starts as a Flunky Boss (said flunkies have the annoying habit of tossing Hi-Potions when anyone on their side is hurt) who will constantly cast powerful — for that point — elemental magic on your party, then he'll whip out Anima once the flunkies are dead and he's at 50% HP, and once she's dead, he'll start using the -ga level spells, which are a guaranteed One-Hit Kill on anyone who isn't [[BlackMage Lulu]] or using Nul-Spells. After this, he'll finally go down.
# Characters.NeptuniaCandidates: In Cyberdimension she's purely offense-oriented, with every skill she learns being an elemental spell (of the fire, ice, lightning, and wind varieties).

# YMMV.FearAndHungerTermina: Marina is a Glass Cannon BlackMage who can blast enemies apart in the first turn with Occultism and increase the whole party's agility with engravings of the God of Fear & Hunger, somewhat balanced by her weapon restrictions. Notably, she also has access to quite a few game-breaking strategies as detailed below. Players who follow an efficient route can end the first morning period with tons of heads, a full party of ghoul backups, and tons of resources to hoard for later. All three of these characters make great protagonist choices and can be fantastic to recruit into a party.

# Literature.RiversOfLondon: During World War II, the Russians created all-female squads of these called the Night Witches. One of the surviving members shows up in the fourth book to have a wizard vs. wizard duel with Nightingale, which is coincidentally the first time readers get to actually see the man cut loose. He's apparently so good that the Night Witch herself is impressed at the end of it all. The Germans had squads called Werewolves to combat enemy magicians. They were magic users themselves, but may or may not have been actual werewolves. Also, the Faceless Man very probably counts as one, as well as his predecessor — or as Peter would say, ethically challenged magician.
# DemonicSpiders.MassivelyMultiplayerOnlineGames: Gaozorans are BlackMage type enemies with *RIDICULOUSLY* overpowered spells. Also, they Teleport Spam around the room and have a fair amount of hit points. Resistant to magic.
# Webcomic.EightBitTheater: OhCrap: The look on Sarda's face just before undergoing Phlebotinum Overload is astoundingly evocative for an 8-bit sprite. Also the look on BlackMage's face when he discovers that "Muffin", Dragoon's "parrot", is actually a dragon. Extra points for Fighter and Thief completely ignoring what's right behind them. According to White Mage, here's what happened after BlackMage became the ruler of hell and gained limitless power: White Mage: Did you feel that? Black Belt: What? White Mage: A great disturbance in the order, as if millions of voices cried out to say "Oh shit." And Matoya, trying to use her crystal eye for lottery numbers, keeps getting "THE DESTROYER IS MANIFEST". Basically, the entire universe went Oh, Crap! when BlackMage took over hell.
