*** While Pan did have a small fanbase prior, thanks to being an ActionGirl in a series that only really had [[EnsembleDarkhorse Android 18]] prior to the introduction of Califula and Kale in the Universe Survival arc. Otherwise, she was such a minor character ([[LastEpisodeNewCharacter only appearing in the last few episodes]]) that most just derided her based off of ''GT'' where she was an obnoxious BrattyHalfPint who was never especially helpful. In ''Super'', she became beloved for managing to learn ki-attacks and flying at the age of one, being BadassAdorable, and generally just having a load of entertaining gags written around her.

*''Manga/{{Lady}}'': George Russell was always a controversial character, because many fans view him as an enabler to his arranged fiancee, Madeleine Waverly's abuse of his daughters, while others posit that he was so busy with work he didn't notice what was happening. [[spoiler: When George decided to go through with his marriage to Madeleine in the manga, many fans considered this the MoralEventHorizon for his character, because Madeleine had been nothing short of a [[WickedStepmother total]] [[HateSink bitch]] to Lynn, and her two children Thomas and Mary frequently tormented and bullied her]]. Creator/ToeiAnimation must have been aware of this, because in the anime he's given more screentime where he bonds with Lynn and Sarah, and [[spoiler: only agrees to marry Madeleine because his father promised to accept Lynn if he did - when Lynn hears of this, she's so disturbed she tries to stop this from happening, and George calls off the marriage.]]

* ''Literature/TheFamiliarOfZero'':
** For many, this happened to Louise after she gave up her nobility to save Tabitha, and went uphill from there.
** Louise's scrappiness is often watered down or removed entirely in fanfiction. It was done first by ''FanFic/TheHillOfSwords'' and then by [[FollowTheLeader about a good number of all [=ZnT=] fanfics that came after it]]. In most cases, it's due to her having to deal with a character that isn't a lecherous doormat and stands up to her, so her violent tsundere behavior won't fly and she lacks the motivation to act that way.

** Capone Bege was nobody’s favourite Supernova when he first appeared in Sabaody Archipelago, his generic mafia BadBoss behaviour, gonkish design and seemingly incredibly lame Devil Fruit made him easily disliked among fans. Cut to the Zou and Totto Land arcs however had fan opinion drastically shifted as Bege reveals himself to be a far more [[FamilyMan nuanced]] and [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass genuinely badass character]] with his Devil Fruit actually proving to be quite spectacular. Ironically Bege has to more consistently liked than the other Supernova (minus Law) as the others in particular Kidd who suffers TheWorfEffect — cause a BrokenBase among fans.

*** A return in ''Journeys'' also did wonders to help Iris due her extreme annoyance while as Ash's companion. Not only has she done like her game counterpart and become Unova’s champion, but she’s also mellowed out.

** This good-looking younger version of Mosquito is the one he uses to slice Death the Kid's arm off. This is an EvilIsSexy thing, isn't it? Had he done it in his massive gorilla-insect-ish forms, people wouldn't have 'Rescued' him.

** ''Dragon Ball'' creator Akira Toriyama himself pulled this off with Broly, one of the franchise's biggest {{Base Breaking Character}}s. In the two movies that featured him, Broly was little more than a rampaging [[TheBerserker berserker]] whose characterization didn't go much further beyond "utterly despises Goku"; while some fans loved him for being insanely strong, others saw him as the worst parts of ''DBZ'' encapsulated: an over-muscled, insanely powerful psycho with the personality of wet cardboard. In ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly'', Toriyama left most of his original backstory intact, but removed his blind hatred of Goku[[note]]The original story of "Goku's crying traumatized Broly" couldn't happen because in Toriyama's revisioning, Saiyan babies were kept in {{Uterine Replicator}}s[[/note]] and portrayed him as a victim of his father Paragus' blind obsession with getting revenge on Vegeta. As a result, new!Broly is portrayed as a gentle soul who fights Goku and Vegeta only out of a misguided sense of parental loyalty and actually ends the movie [[spoiler:alive and well, with Goku seeking him out so they can become friends and sparring partners]].

* ''Manga/OnePiece'': [[spoiler:Bellamy. Prior to the TimeSkip, he was just an [[SmallNameBigEgo arrogant]] dick that none of the fans liked, not helped by the fact he was a poor fighter who Luffy beat with one punch and without his devil fruit powers.
