!! Series 1
[[folder:1x01: Meatballs, Noseflutes and Judith]]
* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kebakko "Kebakko"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentokentta "Lentokenttä"]]
----
* ActorAllusion: Gary and Chris telling Tom [[WebVideo/CitationNeeded "You can't have a laptop!"]] when asking for something to write all their answers down.
* AerithAndBob: [[DiscussedTrope Discussed]] here when a man called Marcel Kebakko allegedly married... Judith. The fact their names are so different that you probably wouldn't make them up on the spot together is what convinces Tom that the story isn't "utter bollocks". However, the story turns outto have been false.
* AluminumChristmasTrees: In this episode, Tom fails to correctly guess both articles, dismissing Gary's explanation of Kebakko being meatballs on a stick and Matt's explanation of Lentokenttä being a region of Finland because [[KnowNothingKnowItAll he once went to Finland]].
* ClusterBleepBomb: Gary after the first round, after disproving Tom and about Meatballs on a stick being a genuine Finnish food. It goes on for 20 seconds.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: This episode, being [[PilotEpisode the first one recorded in the series]], is a lot more freeform and has more pub-like-chat while Tom, Matt, Gary and Chris get used to the format and the rules. There's also no end-screen SigningOffCatchphrase either.
* EpicFail: Both times Tom has dismissed answers given by Gary and Matt based on what [[KnowNothingKnowItAll he apparently knows from having visited Finland]]. Both times he ruled them out immediately on that basis, and both times he was wrong to do so. Even more worryingly, while Gary's answer was ruled out because Tom had never heard of a local delicacy ("Meatballs on a stick"), he's more embarrassed and baffled by how he doesn't know what the Finnish word for "Airport" is[[note]]"Lentokenttä"[[/note]], despite ''travelling to Helsinki by plane''!
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Tom "I've been to Finland" Scott. That's apparently all Tom needs to know in order to rule out both correct answers in this episode, much to his bemusement.
* WhamLine:
** When Tom, having ruled out Gary entirely, guesses that Kebakko was Matt's article, he gets proven wrong, and turns to Chris...
--->'''Tom''': So to be clear, everything that Matt said was a lie, none of that is factual?
--->'''Matt''': Yeah, correct, yeah.
--->'''Tom''': Chris?
--->'''Chris''': Also bulls***.
--->'''Tom''': ''Really''?!
--->'''Chris''': Mmm-hmm.
--->[''Tom then looks up at Gary with a very stunned [[OhCrap expression]]'']
--->'''Gary''': '''[[AtomicFBomb F*** YOU!]]'''
** Matt (who he had ''also'' ruled out early) reveals what Lentokenttä means...
--->'''Matt''': Lentokenttä, which in English means ''"airfield"''...
--->[''cue exasperated confusion from Tom and everyone else laughing'']

----
* ContinuityNod: Gary, being struck off after getting confused by the latter half of the name "Johnston's Robin", mentions that "It worked the last time you did that, didn't it?", referring to the previous episode where Tom did exactly this, twice, and lost, '''twice'''.
* FadeToBlack: The start of the RunningGag of [[EveryEpisodeEnding ending the episode]] with ''"We still don't have an outro!"''
* ObviousRulePatch: Since the titles are all written by hand, the results could theoretically be decided by how well Tom recognises the other participants' handwriting. In this episode (and the next) Tom clarifies that they "swapped handwriting", hence he can't use that as a clue to who wrote what articles' name.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Gary uses this for his answer for the second round's word, specifically so Tom will take longer to write it.
* YouDidntAsk: Or rather "You forgot". Tom believes that Matt is telling the truth about ''Ageratina occidentalis'' mostly on the basis that Matt allegedly wouldn't know that ''occidentalis'' would work with "''Western'' snakeroot" before reading the article. This prompts Matt to call him out for forgetting that he has a [=GCSE=] in Latin language studies.
* YouDoNotWantToKnow: Chris starts describing Ageratina occidentalis by claiming "You don't want it, let's put it that way!" Then he elaborates that it's a minor bowel movement disease, which Tom finds believable.

* CallBack: When Matt makes a reference to Burt Backarack, Tom mentions how he keeps thinking of the phrase "Burt Backarack back, sack, and crack"; one of the prizes they had previously used in ''Citation Needed''.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Gary in round one points out that dismissing him was a terrible idea as Tom misremembered his own question.
* {{Metagame}}: When asked what "Willoughby Run" is, Matt takes the text of a completely different Wikipedia article (namely, [[Music/RahsaanRolandKirk Roland Kirk's]] album ''Slightly Latin'') and uses that as the basis of his "lie." Tom even says of it "Oh, you are metagaming this! I don't like this!" at the end of the episode.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness:
** Matt's use of the word "Mononym" when asking for his answers' context slightly convinces Tom of it being true.

** Tom jokes that Chris and Gary [[CrazyPrepared pre-emptively came up with]] a story of Duryard being an English village and Chris also mentions it's a town in Nebraska that's ''named'' after that village.
** Gary and Chris also give similar answers to what Willoughby Run is; the former says it's a creek in Pennsylvania, the latter says it's an eroding river valley named after the Willoughby estate.

* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1878_North_Lancashire_by-election "1878 North Lancashire by-election"]]
----
* AnachronisticClue: Matt's claim that there were "tractors everywhere" during an agricultural protest in 1878 (although to his credit, they were trying to think of farming technology; Tractor seems to have been the first thing they thought of). Tractors didn't become commonplace for at least 100 years later.
* BlackComedy: Gary mentioning that a Ghost Festival celebrating the dead "Is like celebrating a party in an old people's home". Tom does a facepalm in response.
* CaptainObvious: The many repeats of the phrase "1878 North Lancashire by-election", where Matt, Chris and Gary all have to think of something about that article, which as they all note, is [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative very hyper-specific]].
* DullSurprise: Gary and Chris do this when Tom wins the episode by guessing both rounds' answers correctly.
* JobStealingRobot: Matt's take on the "1878 North Lancashire by-election" is that it didn't happen due to farmers protesting against newer technology of the time taking away their jobs without sufficient compensation.
* MathematiciansAnswer: Gary jokingly mentions that the corpse who ran for his constituent of Lancashire "was one the best they've had", leading to:
-->'''Chris''': Corpses or politicians?\\
'''Matt''': ''Yes''.
* ObviousRulePatch: From this series on, the contestants no longer "swap handwriting" when writing down their wikipedia article name. Instead, they print the articles' names on the cards.

** Matt mentioning "Tractors Everywhere" when describing the prevalence of farming equipment.

[[folder:2x02: Not Even A Real Abbot]]
* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelia_Psarra "Evangelina Psarra"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Monster_(automobile) "The Green Monster"]]
----
* AluminumChristmasTrees: Both Tom and Matt (who both work with audio in different ways), and later Chris, scoff at the idea of someone making music outside the hearing of the human range and being able to "hear the edits" in normal music. Tom discards Gary from his rulings because of his apparent knowledge of audio when editing, and while Gary was also the incorrect answer, he notes that he based it on a real life person he knows that can hear the cuts on audio tape at such a high frequency.
* BoringButPractical: Chris's answer was filled with information on a skin disease called "Evangelina Psarra" that supposedly only affected small religious communities. He gives a lot of details for it, and wows Tom enough to choose him over Matt, whose answer was that "Evangelina Psarra" was a women's archer in the 2016 Olympics.
* {{Corpsing}}: Gary going on a five minute "giggle loop" about a gameshow about bogs and the logistics of it all. Gary then briefly goes on another one when "The Green Monster" is revealed, which is such an unexpectedly apropos card to draw.
* ShoutOut:
** To ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog''. When Gary's says that "Evangelina Psarra" is a musician "in the field of sonic art", Matt points to his shirt which shows a 16-bit sprite of Sonic drowning. Gary follows up with the joke that it's "a hedgehog doing really bad Mona Lisa's". Tom does later have to clarify to himself about his "sonic artist" to avoid confusion with the character.
** The ''Series/BobsFullHouse'' giggle loop described above.
* TrivialTitle: While the title is a quote from the episode, it's from the unrelated "giggle loop" of Gary laughing at a "Bobs Full Bogs", and Matt mentioning that one of the supposed contestants is Russ Abbot, and he chimes in saying "he's not even a real abbot".
* TakeThat: According to Matt and Tom [=EDM=] is apparently "Human Discomfort Music" while DDM would be Dog Discomfort Music.
* ToiletHumour: Gary has a literal case of this, where Gary corpses for several minutes after the panel has been joking about a toilet version of ''Series/BobsFullHouse''; Alternately called "Bog's Full House" or "Bob's Full Bogs".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:2x03: The Sweaty Column]]
* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia "Hagia Sophia"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batlow "Batlow"]]
----

* AluminumChristmasTrees: Gary makes an offhand remark about the [[https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/colour-experience-color-museum Colour Museum in Bradford]], which is exactly what you think it is; a museum filled with colour swatches. As Gary explains, it exists because Bradford was at the centre of the wool industry in England.
* ContinuityNod: Tom mentions the time he was rude to Gary in 1x01 for dismissing his answer on the basis of it's absurdity (Tom was also proven wrong); and he does so again. His reasoning this time was due to the supposed "Batlow" river Gary talks about directly contradicting information Tom had researched for a video about short rivers that had yet to be released.
* ContrivedCoincidence:
** Both Gary and Chris knew something about the real Hagia Sophia. Had Tom chosen Chris he still would've been wrong technically as it wasn't his article, but he knew a fact about it and used it without disrupting Gary's description of the article, which was his. Tom believed Matts unrelated folk band story instead and lost.
** Gary talks about a 3 feet river called Batlow, and Tom calls his bluff as it directly contradicted information Tom had researched for a video about short rivers that hadn't released at the time they were filming.
* DistinctionWithoutADifference: Matt says the article of Hagia Sophia didn't say it was a stub, but it was stub-length, which has Chris laugh tremendously afterward.
* IcarusAllusion: Gary warns Tom of his overconfidence when striking out his answer for Batlow. He later says "Careful Icarus" when Tom run through all their descriptions, with Gary scowling all the way through. Since Matt's article description was correct, Tom was indeed correct to trust his gut this time around.
* NoPronunciationGuide: "Hagia Sophia"; Tom has a hard time saying it, and asks Matt to pronounce it, to which he admits he hasn't got a clue either.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Tom uses the word "Conurbations"[[note]]a merging of multiple towns in urban land to make a city[[/note]] to refer to Matt and Chris's as a collective noun village when asking for facts.
* ShamelessSelfPromotion: Tom mentions to Gary that "he'll just have to watch the video" ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEGzvZ85dgs this one to be precise]]) to know what makes a river. Gary immediately calls him a "Self-promoting F***".
* ShoutOut: To ''Citation Needed'' 1x01 where Matt compares the lobster gag in that episode to a former gold mine, referring how it turned into a place to plant Crab Apples.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:2x04: Matt's Scaly Kettle]]
* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henricus "Henricus"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dangers_of_the_Engagement_Period "Dangers of the Engagement Period"]]
----
* AnachronisticClue: Chris' story about Henricus the drunkard in "Ancient Roman times" is well told and convinces all the other participants, but has one glaring flaw: it claims to both have happened in Caesar-era Rome and after Jesus became a public figure (Caesar died in approximately 14AD. Besides, a drunkard in northern Europe would not have heard about Christianity until a couple hundred years after Jesus' death, at which point Rome already was in shambles).
* IAmVeryBritish: After everyone makes convincing lies for the Henricus article, Gary, Chris and Matt all go "well done, good show, we've seen him right off" in various upper-class English accents.
* LoopholeAbuse: Gary claims for his article of Henricus the old race horse was famous for winning the Grand National in 1899 by at one point going around a gate meant to be jumped.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Chris does this when he starts talking about a German film called "Dangers of the Engagement Period". Later he drops it and gives a pretty detailed article description.
* ThePointsMeanNothing: Tom saying: ''"Congratulations to whoever won. I haven't been keeping track of the scores, [turns to camera] and you shouldn't have, either!"''. He then adds a piece of text in the end screen that apologises for anyone at home ''actually'' keeping track.
* SelfDeprecation: Chris's article is so convincing that Tom cannot decide if he made it up or if it's his plan if he ever ges back in time, to which Chris remarks "I'm from the north, I've already gone back in time".
* ShowStopper: Chris gets applauded by the rest of the Tech Dif crew for his Henricus story, which was so intricately told, that it left everyone flabbergasted when it was revealed it wasn't true. To quote Matt: "I was believing you, and it was my bloody article!"
* ShoutOut: When asked for the description of Round 2's article, Chris says "what's through the round window Gary?", a reference to "Play School", an 80's British kids show.
* ThisIsGoingToBeHuge: Chris claims that Henricus tried to start his own religion this way, which ended in his entire group getting killed, and Henricus getting drunk for the rest of his life.
* TrivialTitle: As with "Not Even A Real Abbot", the title is an unrelated quote said in the episode that has no relevance to the game at hand. It refers to Matt taking a sip out of his tea and laughing at the same time, and complaining about a scaly kettle[[note]]If not washed and de-scaled every now and again, scale can build up from within the kettle, and given Matt and Gary's reaction, it tastes ''very'' bad.[[/note]]

* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ute_Muster "Ute Muster"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windy_City_Open "The Windy City Open"]]
----
* ActorAllusion: Tom mentions that Chris's joke about a ballroom was so funny that he wished he had a [[WebVideo/CitationNeeded "Mystery Biscuits"]] button.
* BowelBreakingBricks: Gary mentions this when both Matt and Gary had similar ideas for their articles on the "Ute Muster"; both went for Utility Vehicle-themed article descriptions.
* CanisLatinicus: According to Chris, "Ute Muster" is a nonsensical Latin name for a university group; a reason to get inebriated and pretend they are of higher status.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Chris mentions that the Windy City Open is a jokey mini-golf competition with one hole on top of buildings the group in the article have access to, which Gary misunderstands as "mini-golf where you putt the ball ''across building chasms''". Tom and the rest of the gang immediately subscribe to that idea, and mentions that it'd be a great game for [=VR=].
* FlashbackCut: Matt admits that he'd completely forgotten what he was talking about due to a tangent, and notes that the camera would've caught him reaching over the paper cards to get a better look at the words again.
* NoPronunciationGuide: While other words have confused Tom in their spelling, none quite as much as "Ute Muster".
* ShapedLikeItself: Matt calls a Penny Board a downhill skateboard, and then realises that ''all'' skateboards are downhill skateboards.
* ShoutOut: To both Music/ChristinaAguilera as a measure of attractiveness, and to Music/TomJones, where the crew sing "Sex Ute" to the tune of "Sex Bomb".
* TakeThat: Tom takes a potshot at Steams' Early Access program after Matt suggests budding VR developers to make only 10% of the game pitched in the video.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Matt attempting to say "Ute Muster" in an Australian accent, and comes off as Irish instead.

* CallBack: Chris does one when Matt tries to think of a collective name of football players, by saying it's a "Ute Muster", Gary calls it a "Boot Muster".
* CaptainObvious: Tom rambles to himself about Chris convincing him about the TV Show article Tom vaguely remember seeing.
* {{Corpsing}}:
** All of the cast laugh at the first rounds' article due to absurdity of the phrase "Wellington Paranormal". It takes a good while for them all to calm down.
** Matt fully admits the article in the second round isn't his. It isn't.
* InformingTheFourthWall: Gary points out to the audience that none of the answers for the first round were in any way Paranormal; Gary said Wellington Bomber skydiving, Chris said it's a TV Show (which is later subverted as it's about looking for paranormal occurrences), Matt said a football team in New Zealand.
* {{Metagame}}:
** Chris picked "Wellington Paranormal" specifically to mess with Tom and make a funny article name.
** Matt admits upfront in the second round that the card is not his and uses a paper-thin lie as his explanation, and Tom still goes for him.
* NoPronunciationGuide: The way to say "Austol" confuses Tom, and he asks each member to say how it's pronounced when asking for other answers.
* PrecisionFStrike: Gary delivers one in the second round when Tom disregarded his answer for "Austol" on the basis of the name being too convenient. Matt was entirely bluffing, and Gary's article was indeed the correct one.
* ShoutOut: To WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons, although more specifically the "Say the line X" meme.
* TakeThat: Toward Australia, New Zealand, and Football, the former due to Gary making fun of the word for Wellington Boots, and the latter is Matt finding the article about a New Zealand Football team "boring", and them being called the "Wellington Paranormal" is according to Tom; "something they would absolutely do".
* VisualGag: Referenced by Tom when applauding Gary for the image of parachuting out of a wellington bomber.

* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lule_Sami "Lule Sámi"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HURCON "Hurcon"]]
----
* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: InUniverse. The first round is very notable for Matt ''accidentally'' getting the subject of the article correct after Chris, whose article it was, messed up and misremembered what the Lule Sámi was.
* BeyondTheImpossible: In quite possibly one of the most bizarre coincidences possible, Chris thought that he was telling the truth about the Lule Sámi by stating that it was a river in northern Sweden. It's actually the name of the native peoples who live on the Lule River. While one of the hosts messing up their own article would be note-worthy enough, it becomes truly astonishing in that Matt's lie ended up being almost completely true, ''right down to where the river actually flows''.
* BlatantLies: Gary first claims that somebody performed a specific song at Eurovision Song Contest in 1995. However, Tom later misremembers the year given as 1985, and Gary makes no attempt to correct him.
* BuffySpeak: When Tom asks Gary what "Hurcon" means, the panel collectively engages in an exercise of the many ways to say "it windy!"
* CallBack:
** Tom mentions that he's had issues with translating Nordic languages before, so when Chris says "Lule" is a river, he accepts it without objection. Later in the episode when wrapping up the first round, Matt and Chris mention the ''other'' times Tom got Scandinavian words wrong (not believing Meatballs on a stick is a delicacy, and not knowing what "Lenttokentää" means, both from 1x01).
** Gary gets caught out when he tells Tom that his version of Lule Sami was the oldest Eurovision competitor, which Tom calls his bluff on early on because he actually knows who holds that title. Tom mentions this is the second time this has happened, referring to 2x03, where Gary claims Batlow is a 3 feet river, where unbeknownst to him, he had made a video on what qualifies as the worlds shortest river that he hadn't released yet.
* DistinctionWithoutADifference: Tom rules out Gary's article in the first round "less flamboyantly than usual", which Gary sarcastically remarks "difference!".
* InUniverseFactoidFailure: The second article was about Hurcon. Gary correctly claims it's a hurricane warning system, but then bungles up the explanation of so badly that an actual hurricane expert felt the need to comment on the video with everything he got wrong (for a start, the warning scales were back-to-front).
* NoPronunciationGuide: Tom doesn't know how to say "Lule Sami", and Matt doesn't know how to say "Indigenous".

* '''Round 1:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feast_of_the_Ass "Feast of the Ass"]]
* '''Round 2:''' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badalisc "Badalisc"]]
----
* AskAStupidQuestion: Tom asks "Where do fake tits come from?" when Gary appends fake tits to Gazza's description, and Tom immediately gets snarky remarks back. Gary then clarifies that it's referring to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Gascoigne Paul Gascoigne]] who, after the Italia '90, wore a pair while exiting a plane.
* BlatantLies: Tom guesses that the article in the first round belonged to Gary immediately after reading it on the basis it's the exact type of joke he would pull, something which Matt later also corroborate. Gary, on the other hand, claims that it's rude to accuse him of this. In the end Tom was right on the money, much to Gary's annoyance.
* CallBack:
** Tom striking Gary from his notebook is referenced at the start, which he has done multiple times because of Gary's BlatantLies schtick.
** Chris mentions that he should've placed the Badalisc Tunnel in Finland instead of Romania, referring to the multiple times Tom has been a KnowNothingKnowItAll about Nordic languages and culture.
* HotterAndSexier: This episode features a lot more crass humour than any episode before it, something Gary notes as "his filter hasn't come on yet". Case in point, a tangent in the first round involved a pair of fake breasts and Gazza the Football player.
* {{Kayfabe}}: Gary berates Matt for giving away the time period of when the episode was recorded (November, not December), as Gary had decoded to loudly shout "It's Christmas!".
* ProductPlacement: Parodied. Tom ''almost'' names the brand of chocolate that aligns with Chris's description of a Sri Lankan celebration.
* {{Pun}}: Matt saying "Hauling Ass" when talking about donkey convoys.
* ShamelessSelfPromotion: The mid-break focuses on explaining [[https://youtube.com/techdif a new channel]] for Creator/TheTechnicalDifficulties content.
* ShoutOut:
** Gary shouting '''''"[[SuddenlyShouting It's Christmaaaaaassss!!!"]]''''' in the same manner as the Roy Wood song [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64n7iS-P1GY "I Wish it could be Christmas"]].
** Chris singing [[WebVideo/CitationNeeded "Mystery Biscuits"]] when Gary mentions Gazza and the fake tits.
** Chris paints an image for Matt where he breaks out laughing when the former mentions a "Donkey with a Cigar", that leads onto Chris saying "It loves it when a plan comes together", referring to Hannibals' line in ''Series/TheATeam''. Tom adds that one of the Donkeys doesn't want to get on a plane (B.A. Baracus hated flying), and Matt calls Baracus; "[=B.A. Ass-Ass=]".
** To Eddie Stobart, a popular van convoy company, as they all joke that Donkeys' have the text [="DONKEY STOBART"=] painted on them.
** Chris alludes to the ''Film/ThreeFlavoursCornettoTrilogy'' when talking about Matt's Italian Curnetto's.

It would take a year and a half for him to put this plan into action where the first round in this episode concerns a welsh place name that is completely fake and doesn't have an article.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Matt tries to come up with an article for "Plot of the rue Saint Nicaise", but every detail he comes up with makes him sound more and more like a liar.
* {{Metagame}}: Chris wins the first round not by being the best liar, but by making up a [=Wikipedia=] article, and successfully convincing Tom of a place that'd make for a great video.
* ShamelessSelfPromotion: As with the Christmas Special, the rounds had a break for the crew to advertise a new channel for Tech-dif content.
